Money is the root of all evil. Google upset because they want to own all links and tell webmasters what they can and can't do. The reason why it is an issue is due to two factors:

1. Links affect their results
2. Links make money

They have to understand that money buys all business unless you are lucky to get referrals. They need to bite the bullet and understand that the real world works in the same way. Its a money and popularity contest. Money gets you places. Thats why no one cares about my comment right now and thats why it wont make a difference.

[...] Now there are too many websites (thousands and thousands) that Google doesn’t even list - some very popular like John Chow.com that routinely sees hundreds of thousands of visitors monthly! Ask yourself is the best search engine in the world one that excludes massive amounts of sites, many extremely popular just for doing what it does -which is sell links? Something is definitely wrong in the search engine world indeed. Do a search for John Chow in Google and see how you will have a hard time finding him, even for his own name! Perhaps even Google isn’t the Google we all once knew and loved! see Google Paid Links - Google Sliding Down The Slippery Slope of Evildom [...]
