One of the hottest stories of the weekend without doubt was Armand Morin revealing that a Google Adwords rep had told one of his affiliates, in an email, that he needed to fix Armand’s site or remove it from the internet for unacceptable business practices, or remain with his Adwords account suspended.

Armand revealed that another client had a sales letter leading to a Clickbank order form get banned.

In both cases the Google Adwords terms being violated was supposedly using a bridge page.

This is crazy stuff, and you can join the 170+ commenters in expressing your outrage.

I will come back to this momentarily.

Google Adwords Elite

The Google Adwords team seem to practice the 80:20 rule, favoring their big advertisers (and themselves).

Adage today for instance has had some advertising data leaked to them by someone.

Lets grab some yummy data to play with:-

June 2010 Adwords Spending

Adage also state:-

While the search-spending document obtained by Advertising Age is not a complete list of advertisers on Google, the accuracy of its data was verified by multiple sources with direct knowledge of spending levels.

Adage’s story concentrates on BP Advertising so I am not going to touch on that at all

Top 10 in document accounted for 5% of US Revenue for the month

Also:-

47 advertisers > $1M
71 advertisers $0.5M to $1M
357 advertisers $0.100M to $0.500M

These are all direct bill not self serve advertisers
Google Total global annual revenue $23000M ($23B)

Lets Do Some Math

I am going to assume totally flat distribution to make my <del datetime="2010-09-06T07:04:44+00:00">rudimentary</del> inadequate accounting skills look good.

Top10 Total = $44.63M
37 Advertisers also do $1M+ thus 37 * 1.5 = $55.5M
71 advertisers 0.5 to $1M thus 71 * 0.75 = $53.25M
357 Advertisers $0.100M to $0.500M thus 357 * $0.200 = $71.4M
(ok I cheated on that one to flatten the long tail a little $0.3M would be the mid-point)

475 Advertisers spent $224.78M

June would be a fairly quiet month compared to the run up to Christmas, but with total revenues of $23B globally, and allowing for the statement by Adage that this list is not comprehensive, I think it would be fair to assume that the long tail of Google’s total revenue is worth more to them than 20% of total revenue.

You could imagine if 80% of Google’s revenue came from just 100 advertisers that the long tail customers would be less important, but it could well be that 40-50% of revenue from search advertising comes from smaller advertisers – though a lot of those would be managed by agencies.

Back To Armand & Secret PPC

Secret PPC is a training course for Google Adwords Display Advertising teaching how to get clicks that convert into sales for as little as $0.01
I have seen and even paid for similar courses from other marketers (such as one from Alex Goad) thus just by watching the intro video from Armand I can tell that the training is probably a viable method, 100% sustainable and isn’t breaking Google’s Adwords terms of service.

This was being promoted with a launch price back in January 2010 – I don’t know whether the complaint was from that period, or from ongoing promotion at the higher price.

The affiliate sending traffic to Armand’s site would be using a link such as this one

http://www.SecretPPC.com/x.php?af=428465

Here is a clean link http://www.SecretPPC.com/ but you can’t test the redirects yourself with that one.

That is a real affiliate link, I signed up to Armand’s affiliate program years ago and as often happens never promoted anything, but I still have 5 years worth of emails in my archives. Also as I mentioned in my comments on Armand’s post I have seen him speak, I also spent a fortunate 30 minutes with him as a “fly on the wall” in London at a conference with him discussing presentation closing strategies with another notable speaker – I learnt a lot in 30 mins.

That link redirects through another one of Armand’s websites, generatorsoftware.com which is Armand’s central shopping cart and affiliate management system.

Thus there is a specific chain

Affiliate Link >> GeneratorSoftware.com >> SecretPPC.com

Then the Google Adwords rep is saying a link from SecretPPC.com to GeneneratorSoftware.com as the shopping cart makes SecretPPC.com a bridge page.

There is even another specific connection between the sites within the legal links at the bottom of the page.

Bridge Pages

There are lots of people being pulled up for this… all those small business owners who want to sell something instead of giving away the farm.

This is what Google state

Relevant and Original Content

Relevance and originality are two characteristics that define high-quality site content. Here are some pointers on creating content that meets these standards:

Relevance:

Users should be able to easily find what your ad promises.

Link to the page on your site that provides the most useful information about the product or service in your ad. For instance, direct users to the page where they can buy the advertised product, rather than to a page on your site with a description of several products.

Originality:

Feature unique content that can’t be found on another site. This guideline is particularly applicable to resellers whose site is identical or highly similar to another reseller’s or the parent company’s site, and to affiliates that use the following types of pages:

Bridge pages: Pages that act as an intermediary, whose sole purpose is to link or redirect traffic to the parent company

Mirror pages: Pages that replicate the look and feel of a parent site; your site should not mirror (be similar or nearly identical in appearance to) your parent company’s or any other advertiser’s site

Provide substantial information. If your ad links to a page consisting mostly of ads or general search results (such as a directory or catalog page), it must also provide additional, unique content.

It’s especially important to feature original content because AdWords won’t show multiple ads directing to identical or similar landing pages at the same time. Learn more about this policy.

That seems simple in practice, but I love this quote Curt Snow paraphrases

According to Google, you need to give John lots of relevant information about blue shoes. You need to tell John all about the history of blue shoes. You also need to do some market comparisons of different brands of blue shoes. And, while you’re at it, you might as well tell him how to lace up and tie those blue shoes. Then, and only then, will Google begin to think that you’re giving their precious users a good experience.

Here’s how Google defined it to me on the phone and in an email.

A user should want to visit your site even if they are not buying something. If a user visits your site and you give them something of value, such as information, then the user will be happy and Google says that this is a good user experience.

Note: That article from Curt is almost 2 years, so some of these issues are not in any way new.

But in the past these rules were typically directed and thought to be intended for “thin affiliate” sites that purely existed to drive traffic to a vendor’s sales letter.

Google is attacking otherwise legitimate vendors now

What is new is this interpretation that a vendor’s own sales page can be looked on as a bridge page to their own shopping cart on another domain.

You Are Not Safe With A 3rd Party Solution Either

Armand has a private affiliate management system, but one of the cases he highlighted was someone selling a cat product through Clickbank, and my friend Lee Duncan recently received a warning maybe related to this… but possibly more because of a lightbox/thickbox style popup.

The problem is that Google are frequently ambiguous in their notifications – small business owners are constantly looking to improve their conversion rates, and rules are constantly being applied differently to them compared to larger competitors.

Data Collection

Google have this fun rule about data collection – they don’t want advertisers sending traffic to squeeze pages. That is why in many cases someone might use a blog, but also use some kind of DHTML popup.

Ian Brodie came up with a cracker of a comment on Armand’s post which I just have to highlight here.

Re: Google’s prohibition of “Data collection sites that imply delivery of free items, etc., in order to collect private information”

When I google “local customers” I get an ad for this thing called Google Places.

It offers me a free local listing in exchange for me giving my private imformation (email address, etc.) to create an account.

So I take it google are going to ban themselves?

Ian

Lets look at that in detail:-

Lets pretend to be Google Adwords Reps

That is a bridge page driving traffic to Youtube

That is a bridge page driving traffic to Blogspot

There is a link to a really unfriendly for browsers PDF file for the testimonials link

It seems the primary intent of the page is for data collection, not providing information

No postal address or phone number

Google obviously should be driving paid traffic to their content on Blogspot or Youtube directly, not to a landing page possibly in breach of their own rules.

The criticism is a little tongue in cheek – of course we trust a major brand like Google thus they can have different rules to the rest of us, and of course it is their rules, so they can interpret them any way they want to.

Solution

<del datetime="2010-09-06T07:04:44+00:00">Drive traffic to a content site</del>

<del datetime="2010-09-06T07:04:44+00:00">Prepackage the content over a number of pages</del>

<del datetime="2010-09-06T07:04:44+00:00">Use Google Checkout</del>

Maybe with Google their interpretation of a “bridge page” is more to do with the amount of free content spread over multiple pages than the link to a 3rd party shopping cart.
If that is the case, they need to get a lot more specific with their guideance to Adwords advertisers.

Not what they say in emails or on the telephone, but print in public for everyone to read.

This has a major effect on driving traffic to any product launches certainly in the Internet Marketing space where you might have a series of content made available to visitors for the “launch event”.

Google are killing the concept of sales funnels

Ultimately I need to get back to my headline for this story…

I think these are the issues

Lack of clear communication from Google

Different rules for different players

Different penalties for different players

I actually have my own stake in this as well..

I sent a very reasonable question to Google Adwords a couple of months ago regarding remarketing, and I immediately received a reply that my account had been compromised and limited.
It took me a week to get my account reinstated, but that killed momentum for me, and they still haven’t come back to me with a reply to the questions I asked.

Whilst I should really chase Google for an answer to my questions, to be honest I am scared to death of recommending anyone does anything even slightly adventurous with Google Adwords and actually pay me for the training and tools I might provide.
When someone is paying you for information there is a threshold you cross of additional trust – they are paying for expertise.

If someone pays you money and you get your account with Google Adwords switched off there is a certain additional level of responsibility/liability.

Some of the strategies would certainly have problems with Google’s bridge page interpretation, because they have an effect on the way you can present a sequence of “content events” within a sales funnel, and severely limit what can be achieved by a smaller business owner compared to bigger rivals.

via Techmeme

Update

I have been digging into some more coverage of Armand’s video.

Ryan apparently was sent a final warning by Adwords – he has tons of content on his site an apparently all that content was available navigating from the page.
The final warning apparently was the first warning he ever received.

In the comments there is a comment from Shawn Lebrun who apparently had a similar warning last week, the first warning being a final warning – his lifetime Adwords spend he say is over $1M

I’ve spent over a million dollars with google up to this point. I’ve always used straight forward, direct response techniques with all my sites I’ve run on adwords.
I got the same “final warning” email last week… and they canceled the account the next day without any other warning and without telling me ANYTHING about what I did wrong.
It was a crippling issue, since almost all of my business is from referrals… but clients of mine that had this happen to them… their businesses have been greatly effected.

Andy Beal has taken a stab at estimating the market size for online reputation management.

As a niche marketer, considering the niche for promotion of various products, I thought I would take a closer look.

The Overview Approach

Do you classify things like issuing press releases as SEO, PR or SERM?

How much does it cost a VC and a company CEO to spend time engaging in comments on blog posts about a company, and is that SERM or something else such as a marketing activity engaging an audience?

Are the creation of linkbait and viral marketing campaigns looked on as preventative SERM or marketing? They can certainly be a liability if they go wrong, but when they are successful, there is the opposite effect

In many ways Andy’s estimates could be on the low side, and Trackur, a tool Andy has created and actively markets could be a good solution to monitor your brand online.

The Forensic Approach

This is an industry which is just bubbling to the surface, how can we determine whether it is a viable niche to be involved with?

Google Trends

I would love to show you some graphs, but Google trends doesn’t have enough data for some of the primary keywords

Google Adwords Keywords Tool

If Online Reputaion Management or Search Engine Reputation Management is a market with money in it, then there should be some aggressive advertising in Google. Most of the people involved should be highly proficient in Adwords already as many of them offer Adwords management as a service as well.

There is certainly some growth, but a large proportion of the search volume might be companies offering this service checking out their competitors, and their own rankings in Google.

The Adwords keyword tool does highlight quite a wide range of related search terms, but nothing compared to SEO, SEM, PR etc.

Confusing Niche

I know companies where if I apply the time they spend on reputation management based upon my overview approach, their costs for a single company might be as much as $300,000, without allowing for whatever time or money they have spent on custom tool development to service at least in part their own need.
At the same time they have reduced marketing costs – controversy is free advertising, and as the saying goes, the biggest problem is if no one is talking about you.

Based upon that information alone, Andy’s estimate of the ORM or SERM market size I would think is conservative, but Adwords tells a different story.

There are Adwords bids, but nowhere near the competition I would have expected if firms are really making a huge amount of money in reputation management. Maybe they all have as much work as they can handle, or they gain enough visibility through other marketing channels not to even bother with Adwords on keyword terms which are showing buying intent.

Based upon the Adwords market, I would almost pass on the niche as being one which doesn’t have enough search volume and marketing spend to be one worth entering under normal circumstances.

But it is a fairly new niche market, with unrefined terminology – potential customers might not necessarily use obvious search terms, and business is mainly on a referral basis or with existing clients as an upsell.

Today’s news is that Overstock have decided that they are axing 3400 affiliates in the New York area because of the previously reported “Amazon Tax” – which Amazon are fighting.

I think Janet was the first to break the news of the Overstock changes

This is a story that both Linda at 5 Star Affiliate Programs and Shawn’s Affiliate Blog have been covering in depth.

The New York Times also has coverage and been giving out some great links.

Techcrunch has a Scribd copy of the original Overstock posted letter (Shawn posted the email)

The New York Times reports that

Linda is also reporting that this may soon affect California as well (there are lots of affiliates in California, they like the beaches)

On the good side, this may soon affect our good friend Jason Calacanis, who as a new affiliate I am sure was hoping to make some money from reputable sites such as Overstock.

The Times reports this will affect large affiliates in New York such as NextJump, Jellyfish and Entertainment Publishing, the unit of IAC/InterActiveCorp that prints discount coupon books.

So Why The Google Tax Headline?

This isn’t specific to Google, it could be any website advertising.

Google have a referrals program for various products

If you run Google Adsense on your blog, you are in many ways an affiliate of Google’s advertising program, you are selling traffic on their behalf.

So Where Would It Be Taxed?

Lots and lots of options

California – Google’s primary location

Where the servers are located

Anywhere Google has a physical presence (everywhere?)

The location of the company buying the advertising

The location of the servers of the company buying the advertising

The location of the person clicking an advert, or maybe the proxy server, or the company that is billed to

The location of the publisher displaying the ads

Adwords advertisers in the EU have paid VAT since 2003 – I believe there is something similar in Taiwan
Adsense publishers in the EU if required can issue Google with a VAT invoice

As far as I am aware, no sales tax is charged in the US at any point in the chain.

As soon as you start down the rabbit hole of online business, the lines get blurred

Earlier today I read about a new report on Yahoo Search Marketing’s Panama over on Marketing Pilgrim, so I thought I would take a look.

The problem is that I am the curious type and tend to click around on the pages I visit, and noticed the Adwords book.

So I clicked through and noticed that the Adwords ebook had a number of bonuses offered, which included the new Yahoo book (which is spiral bound)

<strike>Even better, the Adwords ebook is sold through Clickbank – maybe that bonus is to an old ebook? The link is to the current sales page however.

http://XXXXaffiliatelinkXXXX.pagezero.hop.clickbank.net @ $75 ($14 cheaper)

I didn’t use a real hoplink but that Clickbank link should work… but wait… I am not sure you would actually get a spiral wrapped book as a bonus, it just doesn’t make sense, especially for a Clickbank product.
You can logically give digital products away as a bonus to hard goods, but the other way around doesn’t work too well.

The original book was “Unauthorized Yahoo Search Marketing Handbook” and was 102 pages
The new book is “Mastering Panama: A Report on Y!SM’s New Platform” and is 96 pages</strike>

Update: The guys from Page Zero have moved extremely fast to clear up this confusion and the bonus offer linking through to the new Yahoo handbook has been removed.

Same Book At <strike>Two</strike> Three Prices

The is actually not just one hole but 2, because there is a link to the publisher inventory on Cafepress on the order page, and curious people tend to click these things…

… and find the exact same book with the exact same description for $66.75, though obviously you don’t get the Adwords ebook with it.

That is a $22.25 saving and more likely to be fulfilled.

This is just a friendly warning notification both to the guys at Page Zero, and affiliates. I would pause any campaigns you might be running on the Adsense ebook until the bonus is made clearer, as sales might be higher, and refunds too.

I realise I could wait and try to notify the Page Zero guys, but by my calculations they won’t make a loss even at the reduced prices, whereas affiliates might, so affiliates get warned first.

I have been informed that the additional item within Cafepress that could be accessed is a very limited time bonus offer that was made to subscribers, and will be removed shortly.

Problems like this do frequently happen on launches. Only recently Mike Filsaime when he launched The 7 Figure Code hadn’t managed to include the bullet points on the sales letter in time, and his server was being hammered so hard he couldn’t actually log on to make a change for a few hours.
My primary concern was for Clickbank affiliates who might have campaigns running promoting the Google Adwords Handbook and what might have happened.

Andrew Goodman was notified within a few minutes of my story going live, and the Clickbank problem which was the biggest concern was rectified within minutes.

Google Reader is one of the easiest to use RSS Readers currently available. The code is fairly light, thus allowing you to skim read 100s of RSS articles quickly.
Google Reader is one of the easiest to use RSS Readers currently available. The code is fairly light, thus allowing you to skim read 100s of RSS articles quickly. One of its many failings however, which I have pointed out previously was the lack of reporting subscriber counts to Feedburner.

Yesterday I happened upon something maybe of significance when I spotted Nick Baum who is the project manager for Google Reader had created an account on MyBlogLog for his private blog. It should be noted that he doesn’t discuss Google matters on his private blog.

I did however drop him a question via the MyBlogLog message system.

Nick did answer that message in private, but I couldn’t publish the answer yesterday because it was a private message, and might well have jumped the gun on an official announcement.

From the Google Reader Blog

Publishers have been asking us to report the number of users that are subscribed to their feeds in Google Reader. This is something we’ve been wanting to do for a while, but with all the products that use feeds at Google, corralling the data in one place was like herding cats. So herd we did, and as of today, our crawler reports the number of Google users subscribed to the feed. The count includes subscribers from Google Reader and the Google Personalized Homepage, and in the future may include other Google products that support feeds.

Great… wonderful… amazing news – thanks Google Reader team!

Now for Some Speculation

You might notice I bolded the following:-

and in the future may include other Google products that support feeds

This is pure speculation, but 2007 has just started and a lot is possible.

Blogger – Google already have avatars for Blogger accounts, but don’t have a much of a social network wrapped around Blogger interaction. Even WordPress.com have much better “community” between their bloggers with shared tag feeds and various dashboard features.

Google Personalized Homepage – this doesn’t have any form of sharing yet, unlike Pageflakes or Netvibes

Google Talk – allows you to set an avatar to be displayed

Google Co-op CSE – Again, you can join as an editor of a Google Co-op search engine and it will display your avatar

Gmail allows you to set an avatar

YouTube – Yes Google already own one social network, but it isn’t yet fully integrated with the multitude of other Google services – login at YouTube isn’t yet unified – I wonder how far that is from becoming a reality

Google Video – currently no social features

Personal Search – Would Google ever provide users with the ability to share what they have been search for to friends and family – yes I know there are privacy concerns, depending on what you search for ;) – you could have an option “share this search”

Google Reader Shared Feeds – I don’t share items, because I don’t support the fact that publishers don’t have a choice about their full content being shared. Snippets isn’t a problem, as long as there will be a way to warn you before you share private information you might subscribe to.

Groups – Google Groups are not really integrated very well with your online experience and either you have to fill up your mailbox with unwanted emails, or you have to make a concious decision to visit.

Picassa – You can share your photos, but again it is something separate from other Google Services

Google Documents – lots of sharing possible

Google Calendar – you can share your calendar, and this is one of the strongest features, but it is not well integrated with other services

Yahoo are looking strongly at integration of services. They have APIs for most of their social services, have just released Yahoo Pipes, and they purchased MyBlogLog.

Google does provide a lot of “behind the scenes” APIs for services, and it is possible to create a mashup service if you trust someone else with your Google account info – I wouldn’t personally share my Google account info with anyone – well my wife can retrieve my password if required, though she doesn’t have that need currently.
I didn’t list private services such as Adwords, Adsense and Analytics – maybe those could become a more private portal. It would certainly be useful to merge the data with more than just a hack.

Google is Missing Glue

You know… that substance that joins things together… and makes them sticky.

Google seem to be keeping very quiet about social network plans. Googlers have always been very good at keeping secrets, and have extreme job loyalty. I would think the majority of people who have left employment at Google over the last few years probably did so because they will probably never have to work again or for health reasons. Yes some people whose company has been acquired eventually leave, but financial security does allow a few entrepreneurial freedoms.

My prediction – sometime during 2007 Google will announce a major social networking platform that provides the glue between all their vast array of services.

There ws one small “gotcha” – I had to wrap the text area boxes in [pre] tags otherwise WordPress with its kind automatic formatting added [br /] to every line inside the text area.

The tool does simple expansion of a keyword lists for various matching and common typographic errors such as missing spaces.

I use Google for a lot of searching every day, I am sure more than 95% of casual users. I am not talking about checking ranking, as things like that can be automated with Google’s APis and various tools. When I need to find information, I use Google Search.
I have seen Google suggest other related terms to try such as this, which appears at the bottom of a page when I search for “insurance”.
The Google Related terms normally look something like this:-

I have seen Google suggest other related terms to try such as this, which appears at the bottom of a page when I search for “insurance”.
The Google Related terms normally look something like this:-

But I have never seen this search result configuration before.

Maybe I have been searching with my eyes closed, or not keeping up with the news

It seems Google is taking the top results for the search term entered, and then using some kind of LSI or related term to provide alternative results.

Here is a longer view, showing the 3 + 3 + X layout

Better Search Results?

In this particular search, the related results were probably equal to the results for the specific term. I am sure this will help casual searchers a lot in finding things they need.

The Long Tail: Low Hanging Fruit

This could be a disaster for niche marketing targeting low hanging fruit and niche terms with low competition. If you are not in the top 3 results for the long-tail search term, you are relegated to 7th place or lower.

Adwords – Give Me More Money

On this particular search, I didn’t see any advertising, but then I am in Poland not the US, and there is so much information on terms like this there isn’t much money to be made selling things.

However, if Google are going to be showing SERPs for more popular LSI related terms, it seems only logical that they are going to also add the advertising inventory.

This might affect 2 things

Prices on niche terms increasing

A need to pay even more attention to negative terms in Adwords

Hmm is this exclusive content, or am I a year out of date and need to take my blinkers off?
