Is Quality Content Needed To Make Money?

I first published this post under a different title almost 3 years ago (Jan 17, 2007 @ 6:55), but over the last couple of days it has become specifically relevant.
At the time Jack Humphreys was offering a training program combined with high end blog hosting called “Authority Site Center” which was the successor to his previous offering, “Content Desk”.
First of all I was just going to post it with a quick introductory paragraph, then I decided it really needed some additional examples.

PageRank Update – Twitter Profiles – Tosh

Today we are going to face an avalanche of Technology bloggers who can't help blogging about every intricate detail of Twitter in one way or another claiming that Google has devalued Twitter profiles in the search engine results pages (SERPs) or reduced the PageRank of profiles. Whilst this is theoretically possible, it is also unlikely. To understand why the change has happened
  • You have to understand SEO, external and internal linking, and have an advanced knowledge of how PageRank works. This gives me another chance to drop a very blatant affiliate link to Stomping The Search Engines 2 which is probably the best value (just a measly $1) high quality SEO training online. (http://andybeard.eu/Recommends/SEO-Training.html)
  • You need to study Twitter Linking structure over a period of time - snapshot SEO is for cowboys - even what I am writing here isn't going to be highly accurate, because I don't have access to analytics, server logs etc, and telling a script to analyse every page of Twitter just isn't viable
I am not writing this just for another opportunity to pimp an affiliate link, but I am sick of poor SEO information out there among bloggers. I have suggested SEOs need to clean up old information, but to be honest, this is about as fundamental as it gets I do have a fair understanding of SEO and linking structures, and I do monitor changes, not just the pretty toolbar PageRank Google updates every 3 months or so, or the ranking of my Twitter profile in the SERPs. Here are a few of my more recent tweets on the topic:-

Visible Linking And Traffic

Yesterday Joost linked through to me from a guest post on Shoemoney about Wordpress SEO.

In direct referral stats it didn't cause a shockwave until I looked at the specific pageviews of the page he chose to link to, my Wordpress category.

My category pages rarely figure highly in the most viewed, so I could actually attribute the majority of the traffic to that specific landing page, even if the traffic originated from an email or RSS subscriber.

This takes me back to one of the discussions I had with Joost regarding his Google Analytics tracking from RSS Plugin

Linking To Differing Opinion

There is nothing wrong with having strong, even biased opinion about a product or service, as long as you provide a basis for that judgement, clear disclosure of any conflicts, and where possible links to differing opinion.

Links provide balance

Fred disagreed with what was written about 4 services on Techcrunch and VentureBeat, he provided some data to back that up, and clear disclosure. Techcrunch responded, defending their writers, again fair enough. Fred Wilson followed up with another post, linking through to the differing opinion, thus giving them equal limelight Mathew Ingram was following the story closely, and as a professional journalist who I know links out to conflicting opinion on a frequent basis, followed up with "Bloggers Need To Try Harder" Michael Arrington also linked through to Mathew from his post to give some additional balance. The only negative in all this is that Fred ends up with a reputation management potential problem with a post headline on Techcrunch "Fred Wilson - Hypocritical, Wrong and Conflicted" - probably a bit uncalled for considering how this all eventually worked out.

Lowering The Google Red Flag – Sidestep The Cash Hungry Bull

Lowering the Red Flag SmallWith all the previous discussion of paid reviews and my unwillingness to raise the white flag or bend over, this post is going to come as a bit of a shock. I am lowering the red flag Carry on reading to find out why this isn't the same as raising a white flag, and is far from surrendering to Google on paid reviews.

PageRank Is The Primary Google Search Ranking Factor

Yes it is time for another controversial SEO post, sit back and enjoy.

Every single time I write a post mentioning PageRank, I get comments about PageRank not being important for ranking.

These comments very rarely differentiate between toolbar PageRank and the PageRank of whatever kind Google stores on their servers and upgrades on an extremely frequent basis for every page. I know from first hand experience that the toolbar PageRank has very little to do with rankings, and is manually manipulated based on Google's commercial goals.

Exclusive: WidgetBucks Now Safe To Use

...if you want to

I was the first person to mention that the code used by Widgetbucks included a hidden link just a few hours after they launched, but the problem only really got noticed when Shoemoney wrote about this 2 weeks later.

Widgetbucks emailed their publishers today reporting an update in their code which you can include on your sites.

First of all they state:-

One of the concerns we've heard from many of you has been the slow loading times of our widgets. We really appreciate your feedback and comments in helping us improve in this area. So, today

Linking Abuse Or Linking Awareness

Blogcatalog Members today are collectively blogging about abuse.

Bloggers Unite

I thought of blogging about all kinds of abuse that affect real people day in, day out, but decided that ultimately that doesn't fit in with my audience, or really add any authority to the words I would be writing.

As it happens, today part of a 2 hour interview with me was published in the Guardian (Digg Story you know you want to). I honestly didn't expect any more words in print from the article, because it was so wide ranging, and such

Sharing Traffic For Free Traffic

I know that my short posts such as this one normally send lots of free traffic to whoever I link to, and it is a weapon I use in multiple ways, either to get a point across, or as a clear signal of support for a concept. In this case it is to highlight a concept I fully endorse, if you want more free traffic, you have to share traffic. note:seems like Tinu just hit a Wordpress problem, I am sure she will pick it up quickly. It is well worth visiting later

Pushing WordPress SEO Boundaries

How many SEO blogs actually write original content?

I am not talking about original words, but original ideas which can be based either on experience from experimentation or what I would describe as reasoned theory? Experience based on following conventional wisdom just doesn't count - you only need to read one SEO blog for accepted best practice, it doesn't really matter which one of the mainstream SEO blogs you choose. You might choose a few more for industry news with differing opinion.

The kind of blogs I love to read are those with substance, even if I can't fully understand all of them

Will The FTC Investigate Google & Matt Cutts For Paid Links? (updated)

I don't think so but…

  • Matt probably earns a salary from Google as head of webspam
  • Matt has been with Google since 2000, so probably has a few stock options
  • If Matt says something about a new Google service that encourages other bloggers to write about it as well, it probably has an effect on Google's share price, so there is a specific financial incentive.

We have seen how blog discussions can have both a massive positive and negative influence on large company share value, especially with Apple.

Ippon Blog Plagiarism With Moves Like A Judo Blackbelt

  • Are people constantly ripping off your content?
  • Do you feel powerless to defend your copyright?
  • Is the battle against plagiarism taking up more and more of your time?

Maybe you are going about things the wrong way and should take some inspiration from Judo…

What is Judo

Literally "the gentle way," this ancient martial art (it’s origin is from jujutsu) makes use of the opponent's strength to overcome him, thereby making it possible for a David to throw a Goliath. Kano Jigoro (the founder of the Kodokan style of judo) developed the art into what is now an international Olympic sport. Cheddar Judo Club

Google Selective Page Filtering & Web Spam – Payola $180 Gift

When a page on your site totally tanks in Google's search results, normally there is one of several things that have gone wrong to have caused it.

  • You have messed up - maybe blocked the page by accident in robots.txt
  • Google have made a major algorithm change
  • You have some kind of general penalty or your site has been hacked

It could also be argued that it can be caused by duplicate content, and enter the supplemental results through lack of pagerank. Honest duplicate content could be on your own site, or due to poor syndication (lack of links back to the original document).

No One Reads Your Terms of Service

Unless you stick terms of service directly in front of people, and make important points extremely bold, people are not going to read them.

This was the whole point of a little experiment I helped Paul with over the last week, and the results are extremely conclusive. It is partially to do with the Krak.dk story I have written about in the past, but I think the results also paint a much broader picture.

Can You Really Take Search Engine and Technology News Seriously?

Krak

There is currently a case running in the Danish courts that will effectively decide the law in Denmark for linking to a page other than a home page, typically known as deep linking.
We are not talking about hot-linking, pulling an image or video off someone else’s server into the middle of your own content, but linking as you might to this blog article, using the permalink.

Podcast with Irish Attitude

If you are someone who likes to listen to podcasts on blogging and tech issues, you might like to give Paul’s new podcast a try.

It is “down to earth” rather than full of hype (as you would expect from an Irishman), and my first impressions of it are very good (and that is not because I got a mention in the first episode).

Did I Link to a Dmoz Editor?

Unlike most SEO concious people, I didn’t submit this site to Dmoz. I just decided that if it was going to happen, it would happen. A while back I did apply to be a Dmoz editor for a very off the beaten track section (that was being heavily abused and where I could add a lot of value), but I gave up trying to get my application accepted.
