Already on the DealDotCom blog, but many people might not have subscribed to them.

This is a useful plugin until the guys from DealDotCom come up with a solution of their own. They should really be delivering banners of various sizes to us every day without having to change any code, and an RSS or XML feed to play around with.
It needs to be a graphic without using any javascript, so it can be used anywhere.

Anyway for now, you might find this DealDotCom plugin useful

Now if this was my plugin, I would be requiring an email address to download it, maybe using a membership site script.

Regarding DealDotCom itself, I have seen a few sales already, and I am even more glad that people I have referred have also seen sales but it is important to remember the explanation of how much you get paid.

Whenever you refer someone to DealDotCom via your handy-dandy affiliate link, you get paid 35% of DealDotCom’s profit for every item that they buy. If someone you referred to DealDotCom refers someone else, you get paid 15% of DealDotCom’s profit every time they buy something for the rest of your life.

The current item is quite a useful WordPress plugin for affiliate links, though there are other free alternatives such as Alinks.

It sells for $49.88

Direct sales earn you $8.05
Second Tier earn you $3.45
DealDotCom earn $11.50

I didn’t see any sales of their previous item, EasyMemberPro, but I am curious about what affiliate percentage was assigned. The guys behind DealDotCom are pretty honest, but because it was a higher ticket item, and because they actually control the rights to the product (though with a partner), they might have had a smaller percentage cut for affiliates.

Affiliates don’t know in advance on each item how much they will make promoting it.

To balance the equation, DealDotCom are paying lifetime commissions – every deal won’t be as attractive to every audience, but overall the value per customer must be an interesting puzzle to work out.

Lucia has spent a lot of time not just programming, but profiling the traits of comment spam and I am sure that work will continue.

If you weren’t already aware, this week is reader appreciation week. Now the idea of reader appreciation is fairly good, give out some prizes, give a reader a link, etc etc.

This blog has always been a community site, and since it was launched one thing it has always shared is link juice with a dofollow plugin.

One of the things the Reader Promotion Project created as a way of showing appreciation was the WP-AJAX Edit Comments so I decided to use it as part of my soon to be introduced revamped comment from, which was honestly suffering from neglect.

I Have Made It Easier to Comment
And Get Even More Fresh Juice

Changes made to my comment section include:-

Brian’s Threaded Comments – A highly modified version of the comments.php file was needed to bring it into line with my theme, split up the comments from the trackbacks, and give emphasis on the names of people leaving comments which will hopefully encourage more clicks.

MyAvatars – reincluded after a 2 month break – with MyBlogLog now on Yahoo servers it doesn’t represent a page loading problem.

LMB Comment Quicktags – this provides additional configuration over standard versions. I have already modified it slightly to include the right tags to include highlighted code in the comments, and will add a few more tags in the future.

WP-AJAX Edit Comments – this is a really neat plugin that allows you to make corrections to the data you filled in the comment form, both your URL / Email address, and your actual comment. I have set it to allow changes for up to 30 minutes. It is a great way to fix typographic errors you spot, or maybe a broken link.
Be aware that email notification sent out will contain the original version of your comments, so there is no way to hide what you said previously.
All you have to do is click on the content you want to change, and you can edit it inline. It is a fairly new plugin, so look out for bugs.

I will call this a beta version of my comment form for now, I want to also add a live preview, and there might still be some bugs I haven’t spotted.

Some people make these type of changes for purely selfish reasons, after all more comments equals more traffic.

I think the big difference is I am using dofollow and every single comment that adds to the conversation becomes a valuable link.

Sometimes you make a mistake when blogging and get the facts wrong. How do you follow up with a correction?

I don’t know the exact terminology that press guidelines or rules use, but generally it is something like

Give corrections with equal precedence and weighting

Effectively this means:-

If you published the story on the front-page, your correction should be on the front page as well

If you wrote a 2000 word article lambasting someone, a 5 word retraction might not be looked on as suitable

When blogging generally it seems to be acceptable if it is a minor correction to correct the post with an update, but I suppose that also depends at least partially on the number of people who might have read the original article.

I have noticed some controversial high traffic blogs never make a correction, not even in their comments. A correction in the comments isn’t enough, because most of your readers won’t see the correction.

How about Podcasts?

Professionally produced Podcasts take a lot of editing, and are often downloaded first, and then listened to a few days later. Making a correction in the Podcast isn’t easy, and wouldn’t receive the same level of distribution.

Do it how the Pros Do It

The WordPress Podcast mentioned my Disclosure Policy Plugin in Episode 14 back in December. I was grateful for the mention, but made a comment to clarify some of the points raised in the Podcast.

They only publish the podcast approximately once a week, and had a very full schedule already planned. I honestly didn’t expect a high profile correction.

Episode 18 has just been published, and they spent half of the show dealing with listener feedback. They actually read almost all of the comment I made, word-for-word (and it was quite long), and then responded with an acknowledgement.

I think the original mention of the plugin was about 30 seconds towards the end of Episode 14, and the correction was over 3 minutes long… these guys are real pros.

It is well worth subscribing to their WordPress Podcast Feed although it is another Feedburner Feed that needs the RSS overlay fixed.
