Open Web Awards – Call for Nominations

Open Web AwardsThe Open Web Awards are now open for nominations until the 6th December, and this stage of the proceeding is quite open plan. The current 28 blogging partners (increasing daily) have been provided with a list of categories to accept nominations for, and it is down to each blog to decide how to proceed with collecting nominations, whether to make individual posts for each category, or to handle things from a single post. Voting will take place in a much more refined manner.
  1. Mainstream and Large Scale Networks
  2. Applications and Widgets
  3. Social News and Social Bookmarking
  4. Social Search
  5. Sports and Fitness
  6. Photo Sharing
  7. Video Sharing
  8. Start Pages
  9. Places and Events
  10. Music
  11. Social Shopping
  12. Mobile
  13. Niche and Miscellaneous Social Networks
As I loosely focus on niche marketing, with an emphasis on Wordpress, Blogging and SEO I am hoping that we can get some nominations for some of the more niche players.

It is good to see it appearing as a seed story on Techmeme.

Google Didn’t Listen To Seth 18 Months Ago

I have spent the morning watching a number of contrasting videos which in some ways suggest that Google may have jumped the shark, and I don't fully agree with any of them. The Seth Godin Video is interesting, because he was telling Google what to do 18 months ago.

Seth Godin Speaks to Google

In this video Seth Godin is insightful, and explains to a bunch of Googlers all about Purple Cows and Flipping the Funnel on its side and embracing buzz marketing.

The concepts are sage advice, however there is one major pitfall.

If the perfect way to market a product is to flip

Web 2.0 Website Promotion

Michelle Macphearson just released her Web 2.0 Traffic Generation Blueprint

I got to skim through this a couple of days ago and need to read it again in more depth and do a lot of planning.

It is free, and well worth downloading.

It is totally different to Stampede Secrets which I reviewed a few months back, or the Authority Black Book which I haven't reviewed, but I am sure many people have read anyway.

How can 3 ebooks from highly experienced internet marketers on Web 2.0 marketing and traffic generation be totally different, worthy of your time, and in the

MyBlogLog vs Blogcatalog – Differentiation

Rose seems to think that Blogcatalog is just a MyBlogLog clone. I have just spent about 2 hours drawing up a list of the current differences between each service, that I believe is able demonstration that both services are being developed by a team that truly want to differentiate their offerings, though sometimes there is some healthy competitive overlap.

Sphinn – SEM Attention Wars

Having just come back from a week in Florida, striving to improve not only my own powers of concentration and focus, but how to grab and maintain the attention of readers and customers, for the last few days I have been thinking a little about Sphinn… some of those thoughts haven’t been pleasant, and to be perfectly honest, the good thoughts had very selfish motives.

Blogcatalog
Blogger Social Networking Hub

Blogcatalog is slowly becoming much more than a just a blog directory and is making strides to differentiate itself from MyBlogLog and other Blog Social Networks and widgets.

Some of the things being added are almost invisible, others are much more visible and hint at how a site can leverage partnerships with other communities to broaden their reach, and provide simple feature additions that just make a site more sticky.

MyBlogLog Community Join Buttons (Important)

Eric from MyBlogLog just pinged me about an important item that I know is relevant to a number of my readers. The MyBlogLog join buttons many have in their sidebars.

Unfortunately some people decided to abuse things a little using Iframes and the join link, thus MBL were forced to switch the links off.

I guessed about a week ago that Robyn might be going to work for MyBlogLog as their community manager from reading Robyn on Twitter and matching that up with hints on the MyBlogLog blog. The dates gave it all away.

How to Use MyBlogLog

One of the most frequent questions regarding MyBlogLog is how to use it effectively to gain something… anything… from taking part.

To get the most from MyBlogLog you have to use it as an aid in finding blogs that are interesting, and then actually join the conversation on the other blogs. Spam message either through MBL, or on a blog you visit aren’t going to bring you subscribers, future business partners, and friends.

Exclusive: LinkedIn Kill LinkedIn Fast Widget Functionality

LinkedIn FastIt was good while it lasted, and provided needed functionality to LinkedIn, and was widely supported by open networkers on the social networking platform.

During a routine check of functionality I discovered that the “get” method of form completion which was used by the fast connection solution is now being blocked, and thus have made a notification post on the LinkedIn Answers service within “Using LinkedIn”, and have also changed the graphic that was being served to a number of sites to hopefully notify them of the change.

MyBlogLog API – How Far Forward Are You Thinking

MyBlogLogMashups utilizing 3rd party services are a growing and competitive market, and only people who are fast on their feet get the chance to grab mind share with early adopters. Rarely is there a chance to take advantage of an API – before it is available.

Social Proof is the Primary Benefit of MyBlogLog and BUMPzee Widgets

Security: Is MyBlogLog a Parasite?

MyBlogLog

There is a good reason I include a quote from Dane Morgan on my about page. It is not just because it was complementary, but because I know he is a very smart cookie, that has been around the block a few times with all kinds of affiliate marketing. He is vastly more experienced than I am.

MyBlogLog Wishlists – Stop Thinking Small

MyBlogLog

I hate to say it guys, but all these wishy washy wish lists that appeared today really don’t give MyBlogLog the credit they truly deserve, or really explore the potential of MyBlogLog. Andy Beal has a few useful ideas. Shoemoney also has a list, but I am not going to link to him as he prefers invective to cover up his spamming activities. In fact Shoemoney’s list seems to be an attempt to control the problems his community marketing tactics initially encouraged.

MyBlogLog Tricks and Tools

MyBlogLog

Further to my post on MyBlogLog tricks, Michael Jenson of SoloSEO has announced some very neat tools for comparing MyBlogLog communities.

I love how his blog post ends

If Yahoo/MyBlogLog is reading this, these tools would be great to implement as a part MyBlogLog. All we ask is for 1% of your acquisition price or a free trip to Yahoo headquarters.

MyBlogLog – Social Networking Opportunity

I decided to write a second MyBlogLog post in a row, just to give a positive indication of how MyBloglog can and should be used.

I just received a contact request from Joe Beaulaurier of PRWeb. He had visited my blog, maybe liked what he read, and had also already joined my community. There is a fair chance he has also subscribed to my RSS feed.

MyBlogLog Plutoed?

MyBlogLog is a service I enjoy using, and which provides me with a significant amount of quality readers.

But it is becoming devalued

Recently Andy Beal decided to issue a free Zune MP3 player to a member of his MyBlogLog community. I actually thought this was a good idea to encourage people to use the service, as Andy has a high readership. Thus I did link through to him in my post “MyBlogLog – Antisocial Behaviour?”.
