This is a presentation I did live for the current uQast founding affiliates at that time. It was presented live but I hope most of the audio is understandable.

The keyword term used in the search engine visibility example was “Body Wash”.

I have spent the last 5 months working with the uQast team and my official role is uQast Product Manager… the viral SEO features I spent a long time working with our development team refining the code and I am confident no one does it better… but it is only a start.

Very soon we strap on the booster rockets for rocket propelled Video SEO giving people a reason to share great content.

I am an employee/consultant with uQast, an affiliate and power user, and the video seo features are my baby – damn yes I am biased.

A number of internet marketers are now using Ustream extensively for training.

Michael Cheney frequently holds free training sessions combined with special offers (I sat through 2 hours of one the other night)

I know that crazy guy Jason Moffat is now into Ustream big-time

Another guy who has always been extremely forward thinking with video for affiliate marketing is Russell Brunson. He must have spent a fortune creating his “Zoobie” internet marketing videos. I am not sure whether it was a big success, but I am sure he learned a lot from the experience.

Affiliate Evolution on Ustream

I started writing this post whilst waiting in a room on Ustream of 500+ people, because Russell mailed his list. Unfortunately all I can see is the following:-

Fortunately a recording is available later, it looks like Ustream have problems with this many people at once.

Russell will be holding free training every day… LIVE at the following times

Wed. May 21st at 11 am EST
Thurs. May 22nd at 11 am EST
Fri. May 23rd at 11 am EST
Sat. May 24th at 11 am EST
Tues. May 27th at 11 am EST

This tactic is worth studying.

Russell’s team have created a landing page for Affiliate Evolution

That landing page is hosting the video – I have seen a few marketers do this recently

The new twist to this is that this isn’t some private sub page on the domain, but is being used to promote the primary landing page of Affiliate Revolution, and his opt-in list prior to launch.

If you are anything like me, an email notification before something is about to start is always handy, so don’t forget to sign up to Russell’s notification list.

Here you can find details of the Affiliate Program for Affiliate Evolution

Think I am insane?

Russell has a 2 tier affiliate program ;)

I actually have a good idea how Russell makes as much or more from an affiliate promotion than the person whose product it is, even though he might not be the top ranking affiliate.

p.s. Joy if you read this, you might want to get the tech guys to take a look at that 302 redirect

These 2 videos, where he is chatting with Frank Kern in his living room are typical of the type of videos Jason produces all the time, and I am sure he is making some good money from it.

I think I have been on both of these guy’s mailing lists for maybe 2 years and they certainly know what they are talking about.

These 2 videos, where he is chatting with Frank Kern in his living room are typical of the type of videos Jason produces all the time, and I am sure he is making some good money from it.

Here is Jason’s own warning:-

(Parental Advisory & Warning For Uptight Folks… Frank and I tend to slip in some occasional colorful language. If that bothers you in any way please don’t view the videos. Of course, we are only fooling around, but I feel a bit compelled to warn anyone who is overly sensitive to 2 surfer dudes chatting like we were in a bar. Have fun! )

I have sat through and watched both videos to the end, and there were quite a few useful nuggets, probably about as much as I would pick up from most new ebooks, thus it was well worth the time spent, and the videos are free.

If you are interested in watching similar videos, I suggest you sign up to Jason’s mailing list for Easy Video Sales.

Total Web Video – Video Overlay Effects

One product mentioned during the videos is Total Web Video. Josh Anderson isn’t a surfer dude, but he also knows a lot about audio and video production. I actually purchased a copy a few months ago, thought it was cool, and thus created a 125×125 button and stuck it in my sidebar.
I haven’t mentioned it up until now as quite a few people were promoting it via email, so I just thought I would promote it “low key” – anyone interested in video overlay effects would click the button.
If you are into video, and especially if you are making sales pages and squeeze pages, it is a pretty cool video effect, and the instructions on how to do it are exceptional.
Creating something like that isn’t just a case of downloading Josh’s script, there is a fair amount of preparation involved, and quite a lot of equipment and software, but Josh does explain how to do everything on very low budgets, and provides lots of useful links.

It is a pretty sweet deal for just $27.

A lot of the tips are fairly universal and could be used for most web video (well other than Camtasia screen capture stuff)

Staring

Jason Calacanis (here is a link to all my Jason Calacanis coverage)

Michael Gray also known as Graywolf
Brian Provost of Scoreboard Media
Allen Stern of CenterNetworks
… and some quiet blogger called Andy Beard who no one has really heard of but at least he gets everyone’s names spelled correctly ;)

Whilst throughout the podcast Graywolf was referred to as the wolf, and most of Jason Calacanis’ readers know he has been slacking a bit on his fatblogging, in some ways I can’t help thinking that at least in this episode, the real wolf was the one sitting in the chair.

I was my quiet, unassuming self especially at 1am on my “virgin” podcast, and on an international call it isn’t easy butting in on a conversation to make a point.

The domains by proxy discussion generally took over the discussion halfway through, and being a European (si3429 of 2006) I stayed out of it, and there was some great comparison of Squidoo and Mahalo.

Jason seems to think that all SEOs are out to game his service. I still think Mahalo is going to fall into a trap of always listing the same “trusted” sites such as Wikipedia, because for any term there might be 1000 credible links, and many of the SEO / Affiliate sites could easily have better information than even the original sources.

A good “white hat” , “thick” (rather than thin) Affiliate site is going to have potentially better information and links than Mahalo, and Mahalo scalability was looked at.

The last 5 minutes covers the greenhouse program and how people might attempt to game the Mahalo results.

With Mahalo having $250,000 reserved for Wikipedia donations this year from the $10 -$15 that editors can choose to give to Wikipedia instead of keeping for themselves, and the prominent position of Wikipedia links on every results page, I am sure Jason would really love those links being reciprocated (with a followable link to a fellow “trusted” Wiki).

You can probably make more money writing for PayPerPost than Mahalo, and have the chance to write better quality content.

Yes that is a referral link, and if you sign up for PayPerPost using that link, I will make as much as Jason pays for the “1 to 2″ hours he thinks it takes to write a good “Mahalo Search result”

You could also sign up for PayPerPost using the “Review My Post” button at the bottom of every one of my posts. All you then have to do is write a blog post, link through to my post in a short review, and we both make $7.50

If you love everything about Jason Calacanis, and want to rip apart everything I have said about Jason in the past in that review, you would still make $7.50

I suggested in the comments of my previous post on Mahalo that a researcher might spend a full working day in total on a search result.
For a partial search result with the Greenhouse program, I would hope for at least 4 hours of effort in evaluation and creation. If you have a search page with 20 links, surely it takes more than 3 to 6 minutes to find and evaluate each one for inclusion?
In Europe (well in the UK) that is $40 at minimum wage, but surely a good researcher is worth more than that?
Jason says he will evaluate the payments in the future, maybe he will introduce a tiered system where you can qualify for $40 to $100 per search result and bonuses over time for maintaining them.

Wikipedia is a non-profit, Mahalo is a business – outsourced workers don’t benefit from typical startup perks such as partial ownership, they deserve better compensation.

I thought I would mix things up with a few interesting videos I have been watching

First of all a short video from SMX Seattle on various things regarding duplicate content and paid links. I am not sure if there is anything new, but it certainly emphasises how you should handle syndication of your content with links back to the original.

I thought I would mix things up with a few interesting videos I have been watching

First of all a short video from SMX Seattle on various things regarding duplicate content and paid links. I am not sure if there is anything new, but it certainly emphasises how you should handle syndication of your content with links back to the original.

Delving back into my archives I have written fairly extensively about link attribution and links over time.
It had a few bumps but was never Dugg or stumbled, but still ranks first for terms like link attribution. Write quality timeless content from day one with your blog, you can always highlight it again at a later date when you have a larger audience, and at the same time reinforce it with new internal links with different keywords in the anchor text.

I should also note that I make sure I get links back to my original articles when they are syndicated on WebProNews (with permission), and with lots of links in feed items, I get links from sploggers daily too.
Thus whilst they are syndicating my content, those are some of the best links I get on a regular basis, because Google knows where it originated, and that it must be good content to also be syndicated on an authority site. Hmm they link to me, I link to them.

I should also note that I like their videos because they play so well on lower bandwidth connections (though mine should have finally been upgraded to something 20x faster over the weekend) – I am much more inclined to syndicate their content than anything on Youtube, Podtech etc, because I can watch it easily.

There is some good coverage at SEO Round Table, and I link to them because… well all kinds of reasons as listed before in my 32 Kinds of Blogging Payola and I am not ashamed to admit it.

Of note so far is the duplicate content summit, more with Matt Cutts, and the SEO Meets SMM/SMO session (though that was deliberately fairly basic)

Jason Calacanis Interview With Loïc Le Meur

This is actually very interesting and has some great tips halfway through about “how to game the hell out of bloggers who lie about everything such as Valleywag”.

That isn’t a specific quote, but Jason did make that abundantly clear. Jason actually comes across a lot more “reasonable” in this Podcast compared to his own, maybe because he was the one being questioned, and not asking the questions.

I do wish Loïc Le Meur had asked some tougher questions, but I gather from the interview that Jason put him up overnight before hand in the pool-house which used to be the Mahalo office for 3 months.

Loïc Le Meur is an investor or on the board of a lot of technology companies – I couldn’t find any direct financial connection but it certainly was a friendly conversation.

Credit where credit is due, I found out about this video on Bumpzee from a message by Bobosse.
You shouldn’t be worried about Bumpzee picking up your content snippets, because there is so much smart interlinking happening on Bumpzee, and so much link love being given back from all kinds of related pages that you honestly can’t lose.

Whilst Youtube and Myspace don’t seem to consider the content of the video NSFW, I have taken the opportunity to mask certain references.
No pictorial content would be looked on as NSFW in most countries I am aware of, but there is certainly some female flesh shown from below the neckline.

A subtle mix of tantalizing facts about the most controversial internet industry displayed provocatively on a semi-naked female body can turn into a traffic whirlwind.

Whilst Youtube and Myspace don’t seem to consider the content of the video NSFW, I have taken the opportunity to mask certain references.
No pictorial content would be looked on as NSFW in most countries I am aware of, but there is certainly some female flesh shown from below the neckline.

It should be noted that this was intended at least in part to be a viral marketing campaign for Good Magazine, but there has been an evident boost in traffic in other directions.

Massive YouTube Hit

Who Am I? (Personal Branding)

Vital Statistics

Note: these were from before the video

Billboard

It is important to place advertising on prime real estate, and in the case of a URL, in a clearly visible location just begging or tempting you to visit.

Traffic Rising To The Occasion

It is important to realise that those aren’t just webmaster visits, so compared to many top seo, marketing or blogging sites, those traffic numbers from Alexa are probably a lot higher.
On a one month chart, all you see is a vertical line.

I am not going to link to the video, if you want to watch it, (for statistics and facts about this particular industry) it is very easy to find.

Just over a week ago I started a poll to determine which keywords from the Technorati Top10 on that particular day would generate the best results regarding traffic, and being picked up by 3rd party syndication (some would refer to them as splogs).

I set very specific rules, though I broke them slightly

Just for arguments sake, I am going to say that 1 aggregator link is worth 20 visitors. I am going to look at the total benefit over the next 3 days.

Lets take a look at the poll results, and compare the results to the actual results.

[poll=2]

Sanjaya

This got me a fair amount of traffic (comparatively speaking) , but no backlinks, thus there wasn’t a huge amount of coverage for the keyword compared to the amount of searches.
If I had written something relevant, it might have actually gained a few links.

Joost

A few will certainly be shocked at so little traffic on this keyword. One of the reasons is because of the amount of blog posts covering the topic, thus supply exceeded demand, and my content quickly disappeared from view.

Twitter

Twitter was a hard one to analyse, because I get a fair amount of traffic for Twitter related keywords. I had close to 200 unique visitors related to Twitter over the last 2 weeks, but very little of it was due to Technorati directly, and most of it was for content posted before this experiment.

Dell

I can’t even recall why Dell might have been searched for at the time of my post, I don’t follow Dell news. Looks like the people searching for Dell weren’t exactly keen to click through on what was obviously not Dell news, but it is surprising that what I would look on as a “money keyword” wasn’t being splogged by someone.

Habitaquo

This is the Spanish Language SEO contest – not much traffic but a registered link from an RSS feed widget. I also had a comment left which is more than I received from other keywords.

YouTube

This one is interesting – whilst I had no traffic from Technorati, I gained lots of long tail search traffic simply because the word was in my sidebar.
If you have content that is even vaguely related to YouTube, it would be good to include the word on every page, even if it is a nofollow link to an affiliate product.

Dana Vachon

Not a lot of search traffic, even though there was relatively little competition for the keyword.

Myspace

A very similar situation to YouTube – no Technorati traffic, but some from Google, caused by just having the words in the sidebar.

Harlan Ellison

Hardly a blip on the radar

Iran

Absolutely no traffic at all, almost suggesting that the search volumes weren’t real.

Habitaquo Was the Clear Winner

The reason it was the winner was because it provided me a link, which was worth 20 visits. It might not have been a permanent link, but it was registered, and the site it was on wasn’t a splog.
I broke the rules slightly mainly because of this one link – it created such an inbalance and thus I left things running a little longer.

It is obvious that people are not creating splogs for the terms that most people are search for (at least the top terms). You won’t find that conclusion in any of the “official reports” that get published about splogs.

Continued Testing

The UMBC eBiquity Blog a couple of months ago published the top 20 keywords being used by spam blogs. Now if those blogs were really spam blogs, and they don’t really define a spam blog, then they have to be getting their content from somewhere, based upon those specific keywords.
Some of these are actually money phrases, so it will be interesting whether will will pick up some traffic, or whether the blogs are blogging purely for the SEO benefit.
Another thing to note is that if these are the most spammed keywords, then this post will disappear fairly fast, as I am going to use the keywords in my tags.

adult auto big buy california cancer card casino cheap college consolidation credit debt diet digital discount dvd equipment estate finance florida forex free furniture gift girls golf health hotel info insurance jewelry lawyer loan loans medical money mortgage new online phone poker rental sale school sex small software texas tits trading travel used vacation video wedding

One thing I find remarkable is that all of them are single words, and I am sure some of those words should be joined, for instance “credit cards”, and they are all money phrases. Do people search for money phrases on Technorati? Maybe Technorati is just a holding station to recycle content on these keywords.

Anyway no poll this time, but I will publish the top 10 results in a week or so.

Feel free to leave a comment if you want to try to predict the winner. Remember about supply and demand.

Family Relationship Disaster

I Was Stunned

My father-in-law had been casually thinking about putting all his old family videos on SVHS onto DVD for a number of years. One tape had been professionally processed, but he didn’t like the charges, wasn’t happy with the final results, and didn’t understand the time required to edit video into something presentable.

Family Relationship Disaster

That is the message that filtered back to to me via my mother-in-law to my wife and then finally to me, 3 weeks later.

He is highly intelligent, has run a family business for 20 years and before that he was a school director but is not very computer literate, although he can check his own email now.

Legacy of Knowledge

My late father was a “computer evangelist” more than anything in his latter years. Even his “official” obituary (Len Beard) is hosted on the home page of the computer club he was membership secretary of for 13 years, and he was also highly active in the Orpington Video and Film Makers Club, where my mother is still the secretary, and also organises the Kent Film Festival.

One of my fathers primary activities for the last 10 years of his life was as part of the team on the Computer Help Desk that his computer club provided free of charge at “Technofairs“, a travelling computer show mainly in Kent and the S.E. corner of England.

He handled membership enquiries on the help desk to the computer club, but also helped with various non-technical aspects of computer video.

When I was in the UK I would also help out on the computer help desk, and often would take over from my father on more technical issues related to computer video.

My father was never a “penny pincher” – when he bought computers it was always a top end system for the era, and the 2 computers he bought over the years specifically for video editing were no exception.

The Free Digital Video Camera

My father in law purchased a new plasma TV just before Christmas, and with it he negotiated a free, low end digital video camera.

In previous years I had explained to him that one of the solutions to digitising his old SVHS video was to feed it to the video-in of a newer digital camera, and then dump it down onto a computer for editing. Unfortunately his new freebie camera only has out connections.

Christmas Conversations

Christmas is a time of family gathering, and this year was no exception. I had my mother over from the UK along with her sister and husband from South Africa, and we were all staying under one roof with my wife’s family for a week.

Lots of family videos were watched from all corners of the globe, and naturally the subject of dumping legacy SVHS videos came up again.

Explaining Rather than Selling

I didn’t try and “sell” a single solution as being the best option to meet my father-in-law’s needs. I tried to explain to him the possibilities, the technical issues, and provide him with a number of options.

Exchange his freebie video camera for a slightly more advanced model, so that a SVHS camera could be connected to it

Purchase some kind of HD DVD Recorder

Buy a capture card, large harddisk, DVD Writer and firewire card for his existing computer

Contact an expert supplier locally

Jedi Forces – “This is not the video capture solution you are looking for”

Somehow 3 weeks later he now has his mind set on buying a laptop for video editing.

The system:-

Doesn’t have a large hard disk (60GB for system and video)

Doesn’t have a firewire port to connect his new camera

Only has 512MB memory

Is possibly being imported from the US in some kind of exchange rate deal to get hardware cheaper

Which means:-

Possible power supply problems

The OEM Operating System will not be localised

Support will not be available

Forget about Warranty

Hasn’t been matched in any way to a particular capture device – maybe times have changed a little, but there used to be some many problems just buying a capture card off the shelf and sticking it in a PC, that I just don’t like the risk. I don’t live in the US – no easy returns policy

Damage Control

I am now in “damage control mode” with my father-in-law, not just to help him buy a video capture solution that he is comfortable with, but also repairing our relationship.

The Sales Lesson Learned

There has been a lot of talk in recent weeks that a different approach is needed to sell products and solutions to people. Shorter sales letters, less hype, more multimedia.

However never let it be forgotten:-

Some people with a problem are looking for a single solution
Some people need to be sold, flattered and coerced into buying something to value the advice you give.
