MyBlogLog R.I.P Long Live Blogcatalog

I have long been a supporter of MyBlogLog and in many ways it was the many articles I wrote about how they could improve their site that led me to doing some limited consulting with Blogcatalog.

WordPress.com Bugged XML Sitemaps

WordPress.com has added XML sitemaps so I thought I would take a glance at their implementation. My immediate though was to take a look at Lorelle's sitemap.xml
  • Homepage daily priority
  • Every other page updated on a weekly basis?
That seems like a good way to tell the spiders to index your site less often than they currently do. With Lorelle you would certainly want spiders checking the home page hourly as she is sometimes the source of breaking news.

Never Underestimate The Power Of The Dark Side of Search

That title might have inspired thoughs of Jedi Knights, those with ADD might have instantly warped their thought trains to Pink Floyd and "The Dark Side of The Moon". Both might be correct in their connections. Just like you couldn't see the dark side of the force, and you can't see the dark side of the moon, you can't actually see all of your traffic that originates from search on the internet. This is something that Tim O'Reily seems to be forgetting.
Search is only one way to find things. It's the most easily monetizable, so it gets the lion's share of the attention. But take a look at (and report on) what percentage of techcrunch's traffic comes from search. For the O'Reilly Radar blog, it's about 35%. Significant, sure, but hardly a sign of lack of competition. If Google absorbed both Yahoo! and Microsoft, the share of our visits coming from search would still be below 40%. (That tells you what a small share of our search traffic comes from the other guys today.) And that's just the web traffic. Count in RSS (which is much bigger than web for most blogs, including ours) and the Search share of traffic goes down to a much smaller amount. So there's not much worry about people not being able to find information.

Google Double or Indented Listings

Whilst I gain tons of Google indented listings for money terms, and I can achieve them quite often in minutes, rather than days, they are almost always achieved using a few simple steps.
  • Get one page indexed and ranking
  • Write a second post linking to the first (which will also then trackback to the second page)
  • Use the same primary keyword in both posts
The second method I use, for topics that get frequent mentions, are tags.
  • My post with the highest number of links on a topic will most likely rank well
  • My tag page which leads to further posts on the topic will form the secondary listing

A Quagmire Of Ineptitude? – Yahoo | Microsoft | Google | AOL

I try to avoid blogosphere discussions unless I have something substantial to add. I don't have holdings in any of the companies embroiled in the current takeover / acquisition debate, and to be perfectly honest I am not sure if any of the combined entities that eventually emerge will be able to compete with Google on their home turf.

I am however an interested observer, and I have a number of questions buzzing around in my head that remain unanswered.

This is more a collection of "what ifs" than anything else, discussion points that have no real factual basis, from someone with

MyBlogLog With Yahoo Logins & Mosaic Of My Community

Lets start with the mosaic, as writing about it has been on my "to do" list for a few days.

Maurizo is a regular reader and talented programmer has come up with a great idea for community appreciation, a community mosaic.

I know this has taken him a great deal of time to accomplish, because he first of all asked me for a high resolution photo over a month ago.

First of all here is a baby version of his amazing mosaic

If you want to see the full size version you will have to click through to see the full community

PayPerPost Receives $7M Additional Funding & Launches Direct Marketplace

Blogging Full Disclosure Debacle – Grow Some Brass Ones

I like to keep a fairly professional and level head when I am discussing various issues on this blog but unfortunately I have just listened to the pre-recording that Shoemoney did with Rand Fiskin about full disclosure when blogging, and quite honestly whilst I empathise with some of the points both made, I think in many ways both are missing at least a few vital points.

Yahoo Change Pricing – Quality Based

  • I am like a dog, quite loyal to the person that feeds me - Google have Adsense, Yahoo for anyone outside the US have nothing to offer.
  • I am sure there are a million coupons for Yahoo Search, but in the old days whenever I searched, they all applied to US businesses only - do you give money to a company who treats you as a second class citizen of the world?

MyBlogLog Community Join Buttons (Important)

Eric from MyBlogLog just pinged me about an important item that I know is relevant to a number of my readers. The MyBlogLog join buttons many have in their sidebars.

Unfortunately some people decided to abuse things a little using Iframes and the join link, thus MBL were forced to switch the links off.

Robots-Nocontent | How To Spot Abuse By Sneaky Webmasters

The moment I heard about the new Robots-Nocontent class that can be added to content, alarm bells started ringing in my ears. Whilst this can be used in a legitimate manner, it is also possible for webmasters to heavily abuse it.

I guessed about a week ago that Robyn might be going to work for MyBlogLog as their community manager from reading Robyn on Twitter and matching that up with hints on the MyBlogLog blog. The dates gave it all away.

Are Yahoo Guilty of Unethical Plagiarism With Syndicated Content?

Bloggers often complain that another blogger has stolen their content (plagiarism) or reworked their ideas without giving credit, and on the internet among bloggers, credit isn't just mentioning their names but providing a link, preferably to the original article.

Major Websites and Press Agencies Seriously Don't Give a Damn About Conventions

I am not a lawyer, this post is personal opinion. Please treat any legal information as for entertainment purposes only

Vipul Arora wrote a story today entitled Yahoo plagiarizes content - does not give credit!!

But was it plagiarism?

Lets go into detail and see what happens, and how this all

Wolfpack of Lies – Hack Baiting Web 2.0 Startups For Diggs

MyBlogLog

This seems to be a growing trend, and so many bloggers are falling for the linkbait, poorly researched content, and unethical marketing practices.

Reactionary development of computer products and services can prove to be a disaster both for development cycles and the feature set of a product. An extremely careful balance has to be achieved between supporting the wishes of hardcore supporters of a product, and achieving core goals and maintaining a development schedule.

MyBlogLog Roundup

MyBlogLog

I am mentioning MyBlogLog a lot these days, but there are reasons for this

  1. A large proportion of my readership are using it.
  2. A large number are still not using it (they are missing out)

MyBlogLog Flaw

SoloSeo is in the news today for noting a flaw in MyBlogLog.
Techcrunch, and Andy Beal have had their say.

My opinion – this method of gaming MyBlogLog is useless and pointless. SoloSeo has gained some nice linkbait from the article, but very few new community members. It is a bit like Jason Calacanis and his gaming Alexa experiment. Sure it can be done, but what is really the point?

MyBlogLog Acquisition Coverage

It is interesting looking at the acquisition coverage for MyBlogLog.

First of all Techmeme gets it partially right, that one of the original sources for the sale was Forbes.

If you expand all the related coverage, it is a shame the announcement on the MyBlogLog Blog doesn’t seem to have been cited anywhere near as many times.

MyBlogLog & Yahoo tie the knot (for real)

MyBlogLog – Social Networking Opportunity

I decided to write a second MyBlogLog post in a row, just to give a positive indication of how MyBloglog can and should be used.

I just received a contact request from Joe Beaulaurier of PRWeb. He had visited my blog, maybe liked what he read, and had also already joined my community. There is a fair chance he has also subscribed to my RSS feed.

Paid Links | Hindsight gives perspective

Paid Links

It is five years, almost to the day that Yahoo started charging $299 per year for a listing in their directory as this article on Pandia clearly illustrates.

The main benefit of being in the Yahoo directory isn’t traffic, it is pagerank / trustrank. Who actually uses the Yahoo directory for anything other than listing their own sites?
It is many years since I went to Yahoo to lookup an entry for anything other than a competitor in a niche.

UTW – Tagging SEO Tricks (pt 2)

This is not a technical trick, but something that many people who confuse categories and tagging really need to get a grasp of.
It is also my belief that this is very much a white-hat strategy, but as with all forms of search engine marketing, it can be abused.

Google Reader, Splogs, Linkblogs, Blog Readership

But the Google reader has major flaws, which noone is really talking about. In fact I have noticed a growing tendancy for reporting thee flaws as a cool feature, without any emphasis on the negative aspects of using these "featues".

  • RAP Bank

I have just signed up for RAP Bank myself - call this a mini-review.
It seems to be one of the smartest ideas for a long time as a great way to consolidate 100s of affiliate programs under a single entity for promotion.

It is also one of the best implementations of WordPress I have ever seen.
It is not without its bugs, as this is effectively pre-launch. For example I just found a bug in the keyword based search RSS feeds (yes RSS feeds for any term will be hot), but it looks like they might be onto a winner.
Check it out - signup for the basic service is free.

    >Affiliate Program

P.S. It is not immediately obvious who is running the site, but looking at my Paypal receipt (yes I signed up for Vendor Plus) I believe the site is run by Bill Ortell From Rap-Extras.com who is RAP certified and does the membership add-on that is highly popular.
