"blogging"

Although many people think of blogging as a hobby, this kind of web publishing can also be a source of revenue and profit. In fact, as the time that people spend reading and looking for information on the internet increases, the demand for high-quality blogs is also on the rise.

Is it realistic to make a profit blogging? Although it’s not an easy task.

Talent, creativity, and hard work are all needed to make a name for yourself in the blogosphere. Also, be aware that blogging generally only brings profit in the long run. If you’re looking for instant results, trying to blog for profit may not be a good option for you.

1. Choose a Good Niche

To write a successful and ultimately profitable blog, you must choose your niche well. The ideal niche gets three things right. The topic is neither too narrow nor too vast. It is something that interests you and which you have or can gain expertise. And it attracts sponsors and advertisers.

‘Neither too narrow nor too vast’ means choosing a topic that is delimited but for which you can still find dozens of posts to write. ‘Travel’ as a niche is too vast. ‘Homemade superfood popsicles’ is too narrow.

Don’t think that you have to be already an expert to write on something. It helps to have experience in the niche which you are writing on if only to know what resources to turn to when writing informational posts. And, of course, you should find the topic interesting enough to keep publishing about it.

Finally, the sad truth is that not all niches are profitable. Fascinating topics like music, art, or pottery captivate many people but fail to attract advertisers and sponsors.

On the other hand, topics like health and fitness, personal finance, children, and pets consistently attract companies wanting to team up with bloggers. If you are creating a company blog, the field is chosen for you, but you can still choose specific topics that may bring in potential customers.

Take the time to brainstorm your niche, as it may not be evident to you at first. When you have found a great topic at the intersection of the three essential requirements, it’s time to write!

2. Learn to Write Effectively

Blog writing will likely be a little different from most writing you’ve done before. Bloggers tend to favor short sentences, and posts typically contain pictures, hyperlinks, and other features such as embedded videos and call-to-action buttons.

Blogs are distinctive because they offer a great creative platform for mixing media. A good piece of advice is to be open-minded about what blogging is.

When learning to write a blog, it can be useful to study other popular blogs and get inspired by their style. Do other bloggers in your niche write long, personal essays? Are they writing mainly 300-500 words short and snappy how-to guides?

You don’t have to limit yourself to a particular style of writing. But be aware that longer articles with long sentences and sophisticated vocabulary don’t tend to do as well on the internet as they might do in print.

3. Focus on SEO… But Not Too Much

Anyone who’s spent some time studying how to start a blog has come across the term Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Essentially, the activity covers a range of techniques you can use to help your blog rank in search engine results.

Some ideas, among many options, to help boost SEO are to get a special SEO plugin and to learn how to use keywords. Be careful, though, not to go against Google’s webmaster guidelines. SEO techniques are continually changing and evolving. A good policy is to focus on content first and SEO second.

4. Assess User Experience

Your blog is your baby. When you’ve created it, the asset can feel like such an essential part of yourself looking at its flaws objectively is extremely difficult. But believe me, it has some.

To run a truly successful blog, you’ll have to learn to use constructive criticism. Ask your friends to review the user experience of your blog. Ask for feedback on your writing style. If you have the money, don’t hesitate to get a proper audit.

The only way to make profit blogging is to continually improve your blog, which you can only do by being receptive to criticism and focusing on the top priority, which is user experience. Welcome criticism because that helps you make your blog better.

5. Brainstorm Potential Revenue Sources

Let’s say you are now attracting a decent amount of traffic with your newly-created blog. How do you turn that traffic into profit?

The easiest and most popular way is to run adverts on your blog. Sign up for Google AdSense or find sponsors and start adding a couple of adverts in between blog paragraphs, or on your banner section.

Don’t go overboard, though. Annoying pop-ups and irrelevant ads can quickly turn your audience away.

Another great way to make your blog profitable is to use it to sell products. You could write in-depth e-books and guides based on your blog posts. You could also create an online course or even sell t-shirts. The possibilities are endless.

6. Keep Blogging

Studies show that the most popular blogs out there have been online for an average of two or more years. The proportion of successful blogs that have been created in the past several months is tiny.

Keeping your motivation up when you do not see instant results can be difficult. But it is the only real way to make a profit blogging. So, keep writing, improving your blog, and believing in your success.

Blogs don’t become successful overnight. But anyone with some talent, the right work-ethic, good ideas, and the will to improve can become a professional blogger.
