Twitter’s 2M+ Indexed Search Results Pages

mp4 video H264

For some reason when I was editing we ended up with a much smaller image than before, but as I have more videos coming uploading and publishing as it is. The sound is a little poppy as well as I boosted it maybe too much.

Both are performance marketing, the people sending the traffic get paid if someone takes a specific action.

Real WordPress PPC Landing Pages

I am still working on some stuff with dynamic tracking links, but if you are using WordPress for PPC you might also need to think about dynamic content.

I know there are a number of WordPress Themes and plugins that claim they are intended for use with PPC, but they are not going to solve dynamic keyword insertion, and that could have a massive effect on conversion rates & quality score.

Tweetglide vs Twitter For SEO

Twitter deciding to nofollow links 2 years ago really annoyed me.

When they decided to close all loopholes in creating an active link within the bio area, it prevented me linking to my disclosure policy – that annoyed me as well, especially with all the terrible attempts of providing adequate disclosure within paid tweets that are currently being used/proposed.
There was a huge outcry from the SEO community.

Affiliate Tracking For Product Launches (Pt 1)

This post is addressed to the poorly defined group of “Internet & Information” Marketers rather than the other poorly defined group of “Affiliate” Marketers. I am also going to clump most bloggers into the “Internet Marketers” group, because from what I have seen their tracking skills are pretty lacking, even if they claim to be “affiliate marketers”.

Fairly Useless Feedburner Google Analytics Update

Feedburner apparently has integrated analytics with Google Analytics... woopie doo I suppose it makes things simpler for people who weren't already doing something similar for feeds, and at least they are segregating clicks between email and RSS, something their competitors for RSS > Email such as Aweber, Feedburner, Mailchimp etc have been able to do for a long time.

Technorati Changes From An Expert Perspective

I am always in 2 minds to write anything about Technorati but ultimately the changes to the site today are extremely significant, and I had to balance that against my ability to offer suitable commentary
  1. Since I started advising Blogcatalog a little in private, writing about Technorati, Mybloglog or any other blog directory or search engine in some ways would be like writing about the competition. Celebrating the great things a competitor does would probably be acceptable, whereas writing something negative would be "dissing the competition"
  2. This blog has always had in-depth coverage of blog search, blog social networks and blog related SEO, especially in regards to things like the benefits of semantic markup and tagging. Not writing something would leave a huge whole in my content and a disservice to my audience.
My choice is to write something, but understand that some might look on what I write as being a little biased. In my own mind I am a Technorati fan, so hopefully that will temper my reactions to some features. I need to qualify the title of this post - I have spent countless days over the last 2-3 years studying changes the user interface, plus the internal and external SEO factors of all the large blogging platforms, social networks and search engines. Whilst my email exchanges with Blogcatalog are extremely infrequent, I am constantly monitoring for changes.

What Is Quansite?

This is in many ways one of the most painful blog posts I could write, because it is about a service that is the closest anyone has come in 4 years to the "software as a service platform" I would like to create. The business model is totally different but the front end seems to have many of the features and attention to detail that I would require, and to be honest much of what I want to achieve on the backend & network effect isn't necessary for many business users. If what I want to create is a lion, Quansite is a tiger - different animals, different prey - both killers and could probably co-exist. Quansite is a WordPress based blogging platform for business, but calling it that is really doing it a bit of a disservice. It is the kind of system that will take a huge bite out of the business of high-priced website development shops targeting small business, because so much is done for you.

Quansite Marketing Pro

There are a couple of WordPress themes I know of which can claim drag and drop, but they are not designed for creating sales pages & one-time offers, or "touch of a button" squeeze page creation. quansite-marketing-pro

Stomper 999 – Stompernet Bonus

Stomper 999 is a strange launch, at least by modern standards in the Internet Marketing Niche.
  • Squeeze page for a couple of weeks
  • A few rumours
  • A few leaks of info after a seminar
  • A few leaks on information after an affiliate conference
  • The shopping cart opened on launch day and THEN they are going to drive home the message with tons more free content
But you can buy now For me Brad's new "Mafia Offer" is a nobrainer but lets look at some of what I heard The new tools package
  • Full version Market Samurai
  • WYSIWYG Taguchi testing (Software as a Service / Hosted - up to 100,000 views free)
  • Shopping cart (some additonal fees apply)
  • Twitter Storm - custom version of People Browser
  • SEO Qast - I think this is a desktop video/article syndication tool
  • Full $97/month version of Traffic Geyser
  • Article Syndication network of 17000 sites
  • SMS/Text IM Twitter Email system
  • PDX system with 800 number webconferencing etc (some additional fees can apply)
  • Review System - not exactly sure, but a way to get reviews on Google local, with cards being sent to clients to fill out, pop in the mail and the details are added to local
    • Plus as far as I know all the current Stompernet training is also available which is really worth thousands of dollars.

You Can’t Segment RSS… Sorry

Well actually you can as you could with the now defunct Feedmagic service that I evangelised 3 years ago as something that would be killed off by Google and the growing popularity of RSS sharing with Google Reader. Google Reader still:-
  • Doesn't support simple HTTP authentication so you can use RSS for private stuff
  • Doesn't provide a mechanism so content producers can restrict sharing stuff
This is important... if you want to provide premium content from a membership site in a form that is most accessible for your subscribers. It is even important for anyone using stock photos with a contract/license limited to a certain number of views for which you are personally liable. If you allow people to share blog posts that contain stock photos, it is a significant financial risk... but I am not a lawyer. But segmentation? Not unless every subscriber had a unique feed... Feed Magic had it

Whitelisting Hogwash & Unique Solution?

I am sick of seeing all the opt-in pages telling me to add what is often a noreply email address to my contact list, or almost as bad is adding a real address to my contact list for someone I don't really class as a contact. This is how I handle "whitelisting" (example for Gmail) It works for now, and if the spammers work around it, I will just make it a little more specific by using specific information within the headers, or part of the unsubscription notification.

Unique Sales Funnel Tricks That Will Blow You Away

The other day I was slacking off on Twitter and clicked a link through to a JV promotion that I had seen in a number of emails, but hadn't really taken much interest in. I hadn't heard of the guy doing the promotion, and to be quite honest the topic didn't seem to be the best match for this blog, though it does fit with the overall "Make Money Online" and "Work From Home" niches very well. I am not sure what drove me to sign up as a JV partner with Dan, though the following factors almost certainly played a factor.
  • Supreme confidence in the value of his product just oozes out of the videos he produces (there are lots of them)
  • Lots of professional landing pages - it is obvious he has spent a lot of time working on them
  • A great JV Opportunity but to be honest I would highlight this anyway... you will see why in a moment

Unobtrusive Marketing

I have spent a fair amount of time since I signed up with Dan chatting with him on Skype - his commitment to his JV partners is exceptional, but I am sure that has also lead to significant improvements in his sales funnel as affiliates give him direct feedback. We have all seen various improvements to sales funnels over time, and a lot of what Dan is doing will seem very familiar. The overall design of the landing pages, the opt-in etc, but Dan has added a few of his own twists that take things to a new level. What is special is that the things Dan has added are smart and unobtrusive, but still catch the eye and achieve the desired effect - many of them he has coded himself. It is a rare thing for me to see something and immediately reach for Skype and ask "Where did you get that script from?"

Namecheap Affiliate Program Clarification

namecheap_logoNamecheap as I hoped have been fast to clarify that their affiliate program will work with their standard coupon codes. They still need to update their affiliate signup page as previously mentioned. Whether this was their initial intent, or a change to reflect feedback doesn't really matter - it is now possible to promote Namecheap (as many have done for years without any monetary incentive), offer coupon codes, and make a small amount for each referral.

Now Namecheap Affiliates Can Rip Off Their Readers

namecheap_logoFor 4 years I have been an advocate of using Namecheap for domain registrations. They have had the occasional technical problem, but overall I am extremely satisfied with their service, their interface, and above all knowing they are not going to switch off a domain just because of a single spam complaint. At least one of Namecheap's major competitors will switch off your domain and force you to pay a huge processing fee to switch it back on, even if the spam complaint was for an email that just listed your domain, or an affiliate link that went to one of your sites, sent by a 3rd party. That can happen at any time, and Sod's / Murphy's / Finagle's Law it will happen at the wrong time, such as a major product launch. I have been told by friends that Moniker are also reliable in this regard, though I have never used them for normal domain registrations. Some time ago during other support requests with Namecheap I asked about a possible affiliate program, as whilst it would never pay big on domains, it could offer a little more on things like SSL certificates and maybe hosting.

Keyword Elite 2.0 – Bonus Wars & Clickbank Transgressions

Crazy… But I Haven’t Been Drinking

tom-mccarthyA couple of years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Tom McCarthy on a trip over to Florida for a Strategic Profits event - he is an inspirational thought leader, and without doubt the most animated speaker I have ever seen on stage. He captivates his audience, and for Strategic Profits also performed the role of MC. The package that Tom has finally put together, with Strategic Profits coordinating his first online product launch is phenomenal value at just $497 and whilst a little tangential to what I typically write about, would certainly be appropriate for almost any business owner looking to regain control of their lives and maximise performance. But instead of giving you my link, I am going to do something else.

I Hate Rhubarb Not Broccoli & Undeniable Proof

As an affiliate, and future product publisher, proof (that is unequivocal) is something in which I place a great amount of emphasis.
  • It allows me to recommend a product or service with reduced risk of damaging my own reputation
  • I want to be sure my readers will be delivered the product or service promised, thus giving them the potential to achieve any results claimed
  • Reputation is important - often proof also acts as a significant guarantee that customers will be treated well (within the boundaries of what the product or service encompasses)
  • Reliable data - if I can dig holes in claims made in promotional material, so can my readers
  • Real testimonials - you can pay huge fines for astroturfing
  • Proof in advance during product launches by providing real substantial results in advance is a powerful concept.
  • Proof increases conversions
Lets look at a few good and bad examples

Conversion Rate Optimization For Freebies

Today I have been making some significant changes to my free IM Remarkable Offer that I thought would be worth discussing, though the reason I am making the changes is based upon limited data. I am not a copywriter, or a graphic designer

IM Remarkable Free Bonus No Purchase Required <<< Click Here >>>

IM Remarkable Offer Page "before"

I spent most of my time concentrating on the product - despite being just a free bonus for signing up to someone else's promotion, I wanted it to have both value and longevity. Whilst in the legal paperwork I placed emphasis on the "casual" nature of selection, I spent significant time on each niche rooting out great offers, uncovering a few pitfalls etc. Even some of the Clickbank offers I highlighted had a gravity as low as "0" nada, ziltch, but had great landing pages, credibility, sometimes even celebrity branding to help conversion rates.

Bonus Delivery For Opt-Ins

This is a slightly taboo subject because with many product launches there is a launch competition not only for sales, but also for pre-launch opt-ins. If you are offering an incentive for people to just opt-in, there is a high possibility that that lead might be worth less than a lead that has viewed some launch material, and decided that they are interested in the product enough to hand over an email address. Something else to avoid is any mention that you might benefit financially from just an opt-in - the problem there is disclosure, and as more and more launches include a pre-launch opt-in competition with prizes, especially in the internet marketing niche, affiliate program managers are going to specifically have to allow, and encourage disclosure.

Rich Schefren + Dan Thies = Live Training Heaven

Both Rich Schefren & Dan Thies are holding live training events today that you don't want to miss.

Rich Schefren GPS 2.0 Live

Last year Rich Schefren did something unprecedented - what was scheduled to be a 24hr marathon live training broadcast on Ustream ended up being extended by a couple of hours. Here is a screenshot of what Rich looked like 24hrs into the session - he was still calm and collected, solving the constraints viewers had in their business, even though his servers were being hammered and people were finding it difficult leaving comments on his blog (with 4 dedicated servers) Rich Schefren Live From what I have heard you will be able to listen in without signing up to the VIP list, but then you won't receive a reminder just before the broadcast starts, and you won't be eligible for any of the prizes. Prizes? Yeah Rich is giving away a boatload of prizes, worth subjectively tens of thousands of dollars including private consultation (which I don't think he really offers these days) Rich Schefren Live - 12pm EST (midday) Thursday 18th June 2009 - scheduled to last 4 hours, though knowing Rich he might keep it running longer if there are people online.

Rackspace Cloud (Mosso) Link To Us Payola

I am actually a fan of your new Cloud Servers service. There are some huge benefits in using your service that as both a marketing geek and affiliate I can highlight and potentially drive you a lot of business. However today you have just introduced a payola scheme that will make every one of my clean affiliate links look like a paid link, thus I am going to have to nofollow every single link I give you, forever. You want me to use badges like this, and in exchange will give me "Goodies" of an unspecified nature. Powered by Rackspace Cloud Hosting - Formerly Mosso Powered by Rackspace Cloud Hosting The links are visible, nothing is hidden, but all the same it is effectively a paid linking scheme. Here is what they said in an email sent to customers
Our New "Link-To-Us" Program We're also launching a new "Link-To-Us" program today. In essence, customers who post new links or change their old Mosso links on their websites to our new http://www.rackspacecloud.com site will receive special goodies. The more sites you post a link on, the more great stuff you will get. How cool is that? Please check out all the links here: http://www.rackspacecloud.com/links Thanks so much for being a part of the Rackspace family, and please keep the feedback coming so that we can continue to build the most complete and easy-to-use cloud platform on the web.
The sad thing is this would all be unnecessary if you just made some minor changes to your affiliate program.

Brain Solis and Techcrunch Blatantly Wrong About The Consequences Of Sponsored Reviews With Google

Google does not penalize for paid or sponsored reviews but can penalize for paid or sponsored links that pass PageRank - Brian Solis & Techcrunch are blatantly wrong. As Techcrunch now has 2 million readers, many of them corporate, you would think they would be a little more careful publishing statements that are false, misleading or could seriously damage not just a single company, but a whole growing business sector, even if they clearly hate it. Opinion is one thing - stating facts that are wrong is in a totally different territory Here is an excerpt for the recent fluff piece for Brian Solis on Techcrunch
Seems simple enough, except two things are going to prevent this from effectively promoting the sponsoring brand over time — 1) disclosures read like warning signs; 2) Google is downgrading any blog or site that actively publishes paid content.
Sarah Lacey's recent piece was fluff as well Google has no stated problem with paid or sponsored reviews - with Google it has always been about machine readable disclosure of paid links i.e. use some way to block the links from counting such as rel="nofollow", javascript, block with redirect + robots.txt etc I stated that Brian's article was a fluff piece, because it is very easy to research, but here are a few choice articles.

Why Tweetmeme Sucks For Marketers

The emergence of Tweetmeme during the period I wasn't blogging was interesting - I spent a fair amount of time reading content on sites, and even clicked the tweet buttons occasionally.
This post has now been updated with an official response from Tweetmeme - the features have now been added to the development timeline.
The Tweetmeme site is a useful content source, but this article is mainly about the Tweetmeme buttons. Adding something to your blog, especially something that can encourage viral behavior and add social proof is highly beneficial, and doing it correctly, without asking for passwords offers huge advantages. Twitter is also a medium that is marketing content tollerant, as long as the people following you are marketers, unlike Digg, Reddit, and to a lesser extent Stumbleupon. Thus I have spent some time delving into the code and API for Tweetmeme and the existing WordPress plugin. It has just been updated, thus if you download the Tweetmeme plugin, it will be the latest version.

Important New Features

  • Cleaned up cookie use a little, but it would be better if they set a cookie based on an action, rather than a display. The original RFC for cookies states that browser support for cookies should be a minimum of:-
    • 300 cookies in total
    • 20 cookies per domain
    • 4095 bytes per cookie
To be perfectly honest, I don't want all those cookies, whether they are 1st party or 3rd party.
  • Ability to brand the retweets with @andybeard etc, though you still get "via @tweetmeme" at the end
  • The button is removed from excerpts using a filter on get_the_excerpt() - more on that to follow
However essential features of Tweetmeme and Tweetmeme Button are missing if it is going to be used by serious marketers.

Opt-in Accelerator Warning – Security Risk – Read This First!

Optin Accelerator is a massive security risk for your customers - rather than fix the security problems, the new version just adds fluff without addressing core issues. Anyone can make a mistake, release a product without considering all the possible ramifications, but to release Opt-in Accelerator again without major changes is irresponsible.

The Irresponsible Viral Tell-A-Friend Trio

So far there have been 3 such scripts I have written about, and there is a 4th "coming soon"
  • My first coverage of Opt-in Accelerator
  • Then there was Viral Optin Generator which may well have been a private label or resale rights product
  • Viral Inviter is launching soon - last I saw of this script installed "out in the wild" it was a security risk
  • There is another one I know about, TrafficXplode 2.0 which also features the same security risks

John Cow was a revelation, a wonderful parody of the (in)famous John Chow, and the legend continues with new owners of the parody site maybe providing better quality content than the original, and in a heated competition with Garry Conn. I have known who the new "John Cow" is almost from the start, it was fairly easy for someone on a fair number of email lists to work out, and that is why they have managed to leverage so many great prizes.

ePerks & iHype – Legal Kneejerk – Sues Blogger

I had intended to do a followup this week with more scathing evidence of ePerks shilling all over the blogosphere, but ePerks have pre-empted that by taking some rather unusual and desperate action... Remember I am not a lawyer, and this is a stong opinion piece. I am trying extremely hard to create an assertion of fact dressed up as an opinion

ePerks Are Suing Vlad

I found out on Saturday from Vlad that he is being sued by ePerks. My previous post on ePerks and iHype was just the tip of the iceburg of the information that is being collected, both prior to the legal action, and plans for the future. Here are the documents served on Vlad.

WideCircles – Takes Spam Seriously? LMAO

After my last post regarding Wide Circles I exchanged emails with one of their support representatives, with their message being…

We definitely do not tolerate any kind of SPAM at all

Unfortunately the evidence available to me at the time not just on my own blog but elsewhere, was in stark contrast.

Washington Post Spammed - great way to encourage press coverage

Any legitimate service, if they wanted to get press coverage from an international news publication, might issue a press release, and contact a newspaper through legitimate channels directly, or maybe through their public relations company.

Wide Circles seem to have a different

How To Screw Up Your Internet Business

Jeff over at Coding Horror has just been taking a small pop at Yelp for requiring email account access to find friends
Email is the de-facto master password for a huge swath of your online identity. Tread carefully: * As a software developer, you should never ask a user for their email credentials. It's unethical. It's irresponsible. It is wrong. If someone is asking you to code this, why? For what purpose? * As a user, you should never provide your email credentials to anyone except your email service. Sites that ask you for this information are to be regarded with extreme suspicion if not outright distrust.
This is the same terrible system used by many large social networks, and 2 scripts I recently strongly advised internet marketers not to use.
  • Optin Accelerator - due to be relaunched soon
  • Then there was Viral Optin Generator
  • Coming soon is Viral Inviter which has some redeeming qualities, it works with old address books from Outlook etc, but it is still asking for highly personal passwords, and there are some other security faults.
Viral Inviter, with even heavier marketing and endorsements, will have a huge long-term negative effect on email marketing, with the rewards quickly being overtaken by a backlash of negative sentiment and poorer email delivery which will be universal. Plurk which has very recently become very popular also suffers from this evil invite and finding friends method, but at least has a redeeming feature.

UK Consumer Protection Conference

On my last post regarding the new Consumer Protection laws that came into force 26th May, I had to preface the post that I am not a lawyer, and effectively just speculate on how they might affect online marketing. Fortunately Susan Singleton, one of the UK's leading experts on online marketing law, dropped by and left a comment...

Some People Don’t Want To Fish

I think almost everyone knows this saying
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
How many people have old fishing rods in their shed or loft? I bet they even know how to use them, but for some reason a takeaway Chinese, microwave dinner, or eating out is a much more convenient way to eat. Sure, catching fish is satisfying, relaxing and fresh fish on a charcoal grill is extremely appetising. Then of course there is the fun of playing with fishing line... Fishing Line Photo by John2008

Techmeme Goes SEO

In the past I have mentioned that often on Techmeme somehow search marketing blogs that cover Google news extensively weren't gaining a huge share of the limelight as the "lead" for stories, even if they were first to break the news. Recently I have noticed a lot more stories making it into a lead position. Here is just an example for today. Techmeme SEO Story 1 On Google's new favicon

Exclusive: Share A Post Beta – Blog Post Syndication

Share A Post - Content SyndicationI was honestly wondering when someone would come up with a service like Share-A-Post, because it is one of those "no brainer" ideas that I have thought of doing, but never got around to. When to a huge amount of disbelief I blocked some of my high ranking paid reviews with robots.txt, and hinted that syndication would be a perfect loophole in Google's penalties, no one fully understood what I meant - many SEO experts thought I was bonkers. This is what I meant - widespread syndication with editorial control

Google Double or Indented Listings

Whilst I gain tons of Google indented listings for money terms, and I can achieve them quite often in minutes, rather than days, they are almost always achieved using a few simple steps.
  • Get one page indexed and ranking
  • Write a second post linking to the first (which will also then trackback to the second page)
  • Use the same primary keyword in both posts
The second method I use, for topics that get frequent mentions, are tags.
  • My post with the highest number of links on a topic will most likely rank well
  • My tag page which leads to further posts on the topic will form the secondary listing

Affiliate Evolution With Ustream

A number of internet marketers are now using Ustream extensively for training.
  • Ed Dale with the 30 Day Challenge
  • Sherman Hu with his WordPress Huddles
  • Michael Cheney frequently holds free training sessions combined with special offers (I sat through 2 hours of one the other night)
  • I know that crazy guy Jason Moffat is now into Ustream big-time
Another guy who has always been extremely forward thinking with video for affiliate marketing is Russell Brunson. He must have spent a fortune creating his "Zoobie" internet marketing videos. I am not sure whether it was a big success, but I am sure he learned a lot from the experience.

Problems + Pain = PROFIT for Startups

I have just stolen/adapted that headline from Christine Comaford-Lynch of Mighty Ventures

It is the opening title of the first email that she sends to new subscribers to her email list, and goes on to say

But remember: it's not enough to just "diagnose" that pain. People have to perceive it as a problem in search of a cure. Only then will they open their wallets to get that pain removed.

and a little later on

–Find a problem that needs fixing. –Dig deep into the problem to find out what the real core need is and the best way to solve it. –Take the first step to creating that

Players With Money – Devastating The SERPS

What follows is an example of the Google search results being devastated by techniques taught by Alex Goad in his Players With Money membership site.

In the run up to the initial launch, and some time afterwards, I was ranking extremely well, with only the primary domain ranking better.

Now things are a little different…

That is an exact match search - the SERPs are a little noisy without quotes, with many sporting references regarding players and money, so in this case I thought an exact match is a better demonstration.

Relative search positions for a broad match are the same, though the

Stompernet Site Seer – Ripped Apart

Site Seer is totally free, other than requiring registration. Is it worth handing over your email address? Comparisons are bound to be made with the many free tools available from SEOmoz and SEObook, some of which are purely online services, and others are browser plugins. Many of the SEOmoz tools also require registration, and some are under the hood of their paid membership, especially tools which provide long term analysis of both your own site, and that of competitors.

How Far Will Stompernet Move The Free Line with Site Seer?

Brad Fallon and Andy Jenkins are among the most astute marketers I have ever come into contact with. They want your email address, they are going to use it for marketing their products and select partners, and they are going to a lot of effort to get you to give them permission to do so. My hope is that they will continue development of Site Seer to make it more useful, and thus retain as many referrals as possible. I am a Stompernet affiliate, by referring my readers to them I want them to provide incredible value even in their free material. So far Stompernet Site Seer shows promise, but is certainly not without its flaws So on with this review...

Good Linkbait

How would I define good linkbait? It is the kind of linkbait that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that you did something to make a difference, provided a useful tool, some great content that people found exceptionally useful, or when you invested a huge amount of time researching a story so that you could break real news before anyone else.

Questions For Ken Evoy of Sitesell

SiteSell President Ken Evoy in his Montreal officeImage via WikipediaMy previous post on Ken Evoy of Sitesell attacking blogging created some good discussion, both here and on the Sitesell forums though you need to be a Sitesell owner or affiliate to read the discussion there. For anyone who hasn't come up with a gift for Mothers Day and you live in a country celebrating it tomorrow, it is still not too late to take advantage of the 2 for 1 special that Sitesell are running. Mother's day for me is always confusing. In the UK this year it was March 2nd, in Poland it is May 26th. Globalization and Localization has always interested me in internet marketing Ken enjoyed the discussion that took place here, obviously because it helps promote his brand, but in addition I am sure it also helps with product positioning and development. He has consented to an interview with "tough" questions - I have quite a few of my own, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to "open up the mike" and take some reader submissions.

Banned By Google

It happens... even to the most accomplished SEO professionals. Last August Dan Thies revealed the amazing story about how Brad Fallon, Stompernet founder and owner of MyWeddingFavors.com was kicked out of Google, because of people exploiting bugs in Google. For many people the "proxy hacking" explanation was extremely complicated to understand (I struggled), but what wasn't revealed was how Brad's company survived (and grew) without his top Google listings. It is now revealed, in a 54 minute video with typical (extraordinary) Stompernet style. Stompernet

Open Letter To Google Reader Team On The Future Of RSS

RSS Awareness DayToday is RSS Awareness Day, and as a solid 40% of my RSS subscribers use Google Reader, I thought I would take this opportunity to reach out to the Google Reader team. I am someone who loves using RSS, but at the same time as a business owner I find RSS is not living up to its current billing. Whilst I haven't mentioned RSS day before on this blog, I have known about Daniel's plans for a month, and I might have been the first one to suggest using a dedicated site to promote RSS Day. This avoids what might be looked on as purely an attempt at linkbait.

Viral Optin Generator Warning

Another tell-a-friend like Facebook / Myspace / Linkedin etc script seems to have launched today

http://www.viraloptingenerator.com/index.php

This script is different to Optin Accelerator in a number of ways

  • The script is hosted 100% on your server
  • No subscription fee
  • It doesn't "send home" any date, so it is 100% your responsibility

In theory that makes it almost exactly the same as the scripts used by the big boys of Web2.0 though their servers are less likely to conk out the first time someone with 200 contacts in Gmail uses the script if you are on shared or even most reseller hosting. You would probably have

Optin Accelerator Closed – Too Risky?

When I first read about Optin Accelerator I had a few initial thoughts

  • It took a long time for internet marketers to copy the viral signup mechanisms used by many internet startups, including the more established Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace etc.
  • It is a massive business security risk
  • People are going to buy it and use it and their customers are going to face the risk
  • Some of my subscribers might damage their business either by using it for one of their sites, or giving their account access away.

Now I hoped that as soon as people realised it was a bad idea despite having massive

No Hype But Some People Should Probably Read This

I decided a few weeks ago I wasn't going to hype the upcoming launch of Product Launch Formula 2, because ultimately it is a product that will only be valuable for serious marketers. The biggest problem is that the internet marketers who could most benefit from Product Launch Formula among my readers have either already purchased it, or are pretty much anti-hype, and would much prefer to make substantially less money from their products and services rather than to use tactics that are used by big multinationals such as Apple, film studios and most of the computer games industry for as long as I remember.

Blogging Is Marketing Your Revenue Stream

That revenue stream in my opinion doesn't have to be current, though it is beneficial to at least have long-term plans for revenue.

To quote Fred Wilson:-

If you are building a media oriented business, particularly one that has low marginal costs, meaning you build it once and the cost to serve an additional customer is negligible, then you have the unique opportunity to focus first

OpenAds – $15.5M Funding Series B and Hosted Advertising Management

Openads - the web's largest ad-space communityOpenAds, formerly phpAdsNew is an Open Source advertising management script, or at least it was. For a good overview I recommend Tims excellent introduction to OpenAds. But that has changed somewhat overnight OpenAds are adding a free hosted version of their sofware, though it is currently in closed beta. Even with the improvements they made with version 2.4, and certainly those changes were critical for this move to make it more resource efficient, they are going to need some hefty infrastructure in place to serve all the ad units for multiple sites. So that is one area the new series b funding by new investor Accel Partners will be used. The big questions are who they are going to decide to go up against, and how are they going to generate revenue?

Ted Murphy rightly questions Google quite openly to explain why PPP bloggers are being punished for not using nofollow on links, yet many prominent bloggers post quite blatant pagerank passing links to their advertisers every chance they get.

Not only do they mention their advertisers in "Thanks To Our Advertisers" posts, but they also name drop them every chance they get as a form of disclosure.

As an example, almost every time PayPerPost was discussed, either Text Link Ads

Plausible Deniability Just Doesn’t Cut It Mr Arrington

I actually don't care about the facts in the current drama over Michael Arrington not attending 2 sessions where he was scheduled to speak, possibly because he didn't agree in person to speak.

Plausible deniability is the term given to the creation of loose and informal chains of command in governments and other large organizations. In the case that assassinations, false flag or black ops or any other illegal or otherwise disreputable and unpopular activities become public, high-ranking officials may deny any connection to or awareness of such act, or the agents used to carry

Controversial Izea While I Slept

IzeaSometimes I really hate timezones, especially when a company I closely follow (and even take a couple of punches for) makes an announcement. PayPerPost and now Izea Fittingly I think Colleen should have the first link, she has been a postie for a long time, is a top earner, and has been taking an equal amount of punches being on the firing line. Colleen highlights the fact that PayPerPost have been planning to have a new domain for their Argus platform for some time, and it is only logical that Argus is not housed under the PayPerPost moniker, because PayPerPost will only be one of many services provided. People who actually monitor the PayPerPost blog of course knew this was coming a month ago. Dan, and investor in PayPerPost... well now the parent company Izea, seems happy about how money is being spent. That is important, I am sure the Izea.com domain name cost a lot more than $9 from GoDaddy. Here is a link to the official Izea Press release on the new corporate entity.

Mixed Reactions To Izea & PayPerPost

As always with anything related to PayPerPost, there is a lot of controversy, and mixed reaction. I have covered the more positive stuff so far, so what follows is the more neutral or negative opinion.

Google Reputation Management Disaster With Open Social

Gmail ClownGoogle just walks into reputation management and trademark problems one after the other, and today is no exception. Not too long ago it was their attempt to force people to give up domains legally registered using the acronym "g.m.a.i.l" or gmail, which Google uses for their email service. The Polish Poets are still in business, and apparently Google also lost in other countries. So today news is breaking about Google's new "Open Social" platform for social media web developers. The big problem is that Google don't own the trademark, or even a lot of the concept behind it, and they certainly don't own their own SERPs (search engine results pages)

I have only just found out about Gooruze, it seems only the cool kids get to beta test anything these days ;) Actually I do get to peep at exciting new stuff once in a while, but this one slipped past me.

Gooruze seems to be a misspelling of "Gurus"

Gooruze is a new social network for Online Marketers. You can post articles and news items, there are lots of discussion groups covering specific online marketing verticals.

Even the discussion groups seem to be based around a limited blogging interface.

Dancing With The Gevil – Defamed By Google?

A number of my readers have noticed that Google have been making some minor adjustments to the displayed PageRank on a few sites, and Josh quite rightly pointed out that the displayed PageRank on this domain has for some reason been reduced.

Whatever change Google have made in the data held about my site, it doesn't seem to have prevented any of my content ranking, and unfortunately it is impossible to say what data they are working on to begin with. They could well be using a dataset from 1 year ago in their experimentation with some new algorithms, or just

Why Blogs Suck

Whilst I wouldn't class myself as a fanatical tester and tracker, I do test and track extensively. Having now published this blog for close to a year, I have reached a number of conclusions.

To be fair, I reached these conclusions more than 6 months ago… but saying anything at the time really would have fallen on deaf ears. I needed to have an established audience created in a traditional way, without any "explosive" growth from gaming social media, paid advertising or leveraging existing traffic.

  • It would have been looked on as moaning and whining
  • I would be told that you can't

John Chow Slammed In Free Report

I wrote a review for Alvin a couple of months back.

I know I have probably sent him around 30 visitors to his blogging ebook, and maybe 50 or 60 visitors to his blog on making money blogging.

Now if you read recently Maki's article on how to get traffic from popular blogs, Maki's 10th point was donations and

Blogrush LogoBlogrush has just launched and is promising to help bloggers generate more targeted traffic to their blogs.

Blog bling, blog community and blog traffic widgets are becoming quite a conjested marketplace, so what makes Blogrush, the newest contender something to take note of?

I have a lot of respect for John Reese. People talk about The Digg effect, John Reese can send Digg like traffic to a site just by sending an email, and what is more important is that he sends qualified traffic, buying traffic.

RSSBrief – PayPerPost To Directly Compete With Feedburner and Google Reader?

The guys from PayPerPost might cause a lot of controversy, but there is one thing that I doubt anyone could deny, even their most harsh critics… they are smart.

They bring out interesting, useful, sometimes controversial or disruptive products, but they are certainly market leaders not the following pack.

In the case of RSSBrief, they are taking on an existing market, RSS Readers, and in many ways it seems they might also step into reputation management and RSS Search.

Top Make Money Online Blogs

Lists to resources are quite often more useful than a single website reference and Mark at 45n5 has created a list of the top Make Money Online blogs.

What I especially like is that he hasn't just included those that include the keywords in the title and in the title of almost every single post thus there are a lot of sites that specialise in affiliate marketing, blogging, ppc etc

Mark is quite a good programmer, thus I expect him to probably start including other ranking factors that he can pull down using various APIs to make the list less subject

Targeted Audiences Like Being Sold To

An article on Business Week highlights research carried out by Tivo to determine which adverts people watch and which adverts they skip.

IF THERE'S ONE LESSON from TiVo Stop||Watch, it's that relevancy outweighs creativity in TV commercials–by a lot. The ads on the "least-fast-forwarded" list aren't funny, they aren't touching, and they aren't clever. And they don't have big budgets. The top three overall in June (the latest month for which data are available) were CORT Furniture, Dominican Republic Tourism, and Hooters Restaurant. Several throw 800-numbers at you at the end.

But all of these ads are well-tailored to their audiences

Open Social Web – Google + Feedburner Really Is Bad For RSS

I honestly laughed when I saw the new "Open Social Web" Bill of Rights launched yesterday, not because it isn't to some extent a useful idea, but because of one specific term…

Control of whether and how such personal information is shared with others

10 months ago I fired off a heated debate about RSS sharing, and how Google with it's easy to share feeds could be killing the future of RSS. Now I say I fired it off, but honestly it would have been a storm in a teacup without Robert Scoble taking part with one of his most

The One Million [blank] Day

In the realm of Internet & Affiliate Marketing, John Reese with his $1,000,000 Day certainly got his name in the history books, and many others have emulated his achievement.

You can start multiplying the number, or adding zeros, but that is rarely as impressive.

The One Million Link Day

One million links from separate legitimate domains owned by different people

A pretty awe inspiring concept

With the right planning and concept, I do think 10,000 is easily possible within one day, 100,000 would take extreme planning.

Counting Links

These things are hard to quantify from external sources. Yahoo reports almost all links, including those with nofollow, and

Precisely Why It Pays To Update Your Sales Pages

Earlier today I read about a new report on Yahoo Search Marketing's Panama over on Marketing Pilgrim, so I thought I would take a look. Adtrackz Offline – Login Error – Domain Expired

I was greeted with the following when I went to log into Adtrackz this morning:- Adtrackz Domain Expired The Adtrackz domain has expired, and unfortunately this is going to cause lots of problems. Adtrackz uses some software protection to prevent you installing the script on too many servers and giving it away to all your friends. It only performs the check when you log into your stats or to create new links, but the check relies on a check for authorized domains with the main Adtrackz.com domain I should note that existing tracking links are still working, you just can't check your stats or create new links, though "on the fly" creation

How To Track RSS Subscriptions Using Google Analytics

One of the most frustrating things about RSS is not being able to track RSS subscription rates from source traffic. There are other problems such as how people interact with your RSS content, but even being able to determine which sources of traffic result in subscribers would be a huge commercial advantage for bloggers, allowing them to focus their efforts on traffic generation strategies that will grow their business.

Gather Success Review

Reviewing other bloggers rather than products and services, without duplicating previous content, and still providing a useful service is actually quite a challenge. This is especially true when you are trying to maintain a claim that all links are editorial, and writing more than brief 100 word promos. I like to offer more than “buzz”.

Fortunately Alvin Phang has a wealth of unique ideas on his blog, that I found extremely interesting, and although he is the author of a new blogging ebook for beginners, I can even offer a few tips he might have overlooked in his busy schedule (he has just come back from a seminar in Bangkok)

I have also proposed something different to Alvin for this paid review – Alvin mentioned a few things I might find interesting, and I decided that I will split the review into 3 parts.

  • Blog & Content Review – that is what this post will be covering – I will highlight a lot of his unique content and one or two minor improvements.
  • Ebook Review – I am an affiliate, and at first look I didn’t see anything within Alvin’s new ebook that I strongly disagree with – that is actually rare for many blogging ebooks, so I am going to write a separate review, and include affiliate links (the link above however isn’t an affiliate link, and was purely editorial if you want to take a look)
  • Private consultation – there are a few tips that I don’t want to broadcast publicly, because if too many people know about them, they become less useful. In this case they are specific to some of the things he is doing.

The Gather Success Review

I like the design, the subscription options are very prominent in the header though slightly more subtle than my own. His feeds are all redirected to Feedburner using the Feedsmith plugin, though there is one problem, the “RSS Logo” and “Feedburner Logo” are not hyper-linked to his RSS feed. This means that RSS users would only be able to add him to their RSS reader using auto-discovery in their browsers. This might be something Alvin just overlooked, or a deliberate attempt to gather more email subscribers rather than RSS.

For monetization Alvin is using a number of subscription based affiliate programs which provide him with recurring income, and offers a useful free ebook as an incentive for email subscribers. He is also offers Sponsored Reviews, though I couldn’t see any conversions.

2000 MyBlogLogs

Alvin is a fan of MyBlogLog, and 2000 Bloggers. That is clearly evident from one of his viral projects, 2000 MyBlogLogs.

I am going to paste the widget code at the bottom of this review though I am going to use a “more” tag so it doesn’t slow down my front page from loading (it is heavy enough already)

I should point out that the 2000 MyBlogLoggers is purely javascript, so taking part isn’t going to affect your Technorati or search engine ranking, positively or negatively.

Anyone can join in, they just have to visit Alvin’s site and leave a comment in the 2000 MyBlogLoggers thread.

He provides video instruction on how to set up the code to display in a page which is typical for the whole blog, he uses video extensively to express his ideas, provide tutorials, and conduct interviews with top internet marketers.

Ask Campaign Takes a Leap

This is the first time I have seen this idea, though maybe others have done this before.

One of the best strategies for product creation is to ask potential customers a series of questions and then use that for either blogging ideas, or for a paid product.

The concept and even a useful service was widely promoted by Alex Mandossian with his Ask Database.

It is also similar to techniques used in the Project Launch Formula, because he has created a blog post that over time will gather 100s of comments with people sharing that they are having the same, or similar problems online.
If Alvin eventually launches a product that solves all these problems, those customers are going to be warmer.

However Alvin has taken this to another level,
the World’s First Paid Per Comment

Rather than what is typical of an Ask campaign, offering an incentive for filling out a questionnaire, or a teleconference actually addressing the problems, Alvin is paying cash.

It is a smart idea that might need a little refining. I think it needs a random element, rather than declaring which comment number is going to win the prize, and also some prizes for best comment as voted for using a voting or rating plugin.

I am actually amazed at the quality of the comments so far, and it is clear that this technique could be used by others to great effect.

Hits Report

I mentioned that Alvin is using a lot of video on his site, and no exception are his monthly traffic data reports. He goes through how much traffic he has been generating to his blog, and what techniques he has been using.

He uses a lot of video for this, but as the following video shows, he is well aware that this type of video isn’t going to get him a lot of traffic.

Embedded Video – you may have to click through to watch

Well worth watching the video, Alvin goes through the kind of videos that are successful on YouTube, and points out how little traffic most marketing related videos actually receive, even if they are pushed by someone with a reasonably sized email list.

Blogging Tips

  • When Alvin has tags in his content, he should really point them to his own tag pages, and not to Technorati.
  • There are a lot of links to external sites in his sidebar, especially things like affiliate links that should be nofollowed. He uses lots of internal linking on every page which helps to counteract this, but why throw Google Juice away?
  • I would like to see related posts as I find it useful when browsing a site, and it is good for SEO
  • I would be tempted to turn off the MyBlogLog display of how many clicks an advert has received. You don’t want me to know your best performing adverts
  • Add some tracking of your own for affiliate links – I use Adtrackz, but there are plenty of other scripts available which do similar things.

Alvin has been quite busy recently, with both a product launch and a lot of travelling, so a lot of things sometimes get overlooked.

I spent a fair amount of time reading Alvin’s blog, and I am now a subscriber. He is working really hard to develop unique content and I am sure most bloggers and marketers will pick up some useful ideas, not only from the content Alvin creates, but also in how he is doing things in a much more organised manner than many blogs in the same niche.

A review of Atomic Blogging to follow, and Alvin should have an email from me soon with some more private tips.

The 2000 MyBlogLoggers widget code follows

How To Launch a NSFW Site On Mainstream Video Sites

A subtle mix of tantalizing facts about the most controversial internet industry displayed provocatively on a semi-naked female body can turn into a traffic whirlwind.

Whilst Youtube and Myspace don’t seem to consider the content of the video NSFW, I have taken the opportunity to mask certain references.
No pictorial content would be looked on as NSFW in most countries I am aware of, but there is certainly some female flesh shown from below the neckline.

It should be noted that this was intended at least in part to be a viral marketing campaign for Good Magazine, but there has been an evident boost in traffic in other directions.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

I have been a little tied up this week to respond to a number of things and I have always tried to respond as quickly as possible. Please forgive me.

Exclusive: Blogcatalog vs Technorati? – Sharing The Love & Tagging (nofollow removed)

As most of my readers are no doubt aware, I am a strong supporter of sharing the link love, but I always advocate sharing it in a focused manner, preferably from relevant content or from comments and trackbacks. If you trackback/pingback this blog you receive a reciprocal link between highly relevant content automatically, and not only Google and other major search engines count the links as relevant, but also blogging search engines such as Technorati, though with Technorati it is best to do it on a more recent post.

Blogcatalog Slam Dunks MyBlogLog?

When Blogcatalog announced their entry into the social network of blogging I almost totally ignored it. Oops…

In June 2005 Brad Jasper sold Blogcatalog to Jacob Gower

Is Akismet a Spam Magnet? Plus a little on Trackbacks

I am going to keep this fairly short.

I was just reading Paul’s post on trackbacks as there seems to me some kind of meme floating around started by Steve Rubel that trackbacks are dead.

Are Press Releases More Cost Effective Than PPC Advertising?

Not long ago I wrote about how PRWeb can be used to grab some useful backlinks on pages that might experience reasonable qualified traffic, especially from members of the press, or owners of quality websites.

WOOT Creating Twitter Splogs

Twitter | Google Toolbar ButtonIf an affiliate created a blog and fed a datafeed to that blog, a large proportion of the blogosphere would regard that blog as a splog, especially if it was on blogspot.

Email Phishing – Idiotic Company Matchups

I can only conclude that email spammers and phishers are somehow inhabitants of another planet, totally unconnected from real world issues. If name dropping one Fortune 500 company doesn’t bring results, why not drop two?

How to Coax Citations and Links From The Press

The press are an evil bunch:- they phone you when you are busy, ask you lots of difficult questions, try to trip you up or squeeze something juicy out of you, wasting lots of your time, and the buggers rarely give you a citation or a link for your efforts.

Do People Use Feed Counters to Show Off? Top 10 Ways to A Massive Subscriber List

Feedburner for as long as I remember have provided a daily updated feed counter that you can display on your blog. The way the feed count is updated is actually fairly complex as they mentioned in an announcement yesterday that some publishers might notice an increase due to algorithm change.

Business Growth Systems Review | Stop Working on Sundays

Are you sick of regurgitated lists full of tips from people who have never made any real money online?

Rich Schefren

My respect for Rich Schefren started with one of the smallest details possible, actually one I had the cheek to criticise John Reese about not too long ago. In fact I would say 95% of Internet Marketing guru blogs overlook this one small factor.

Rich Schefren's blog uses SEO friendly permalinks

If you are on lots of internet marketing mailing lists, I am sure you have received a few emails about Rich Schefren over the last 6 months. You might have even

Shoemoney Media and Mediawhiz (The parent company of Text Link Ads and ReviewMe) have released an innovative new monetization model, based upon Ebay Auctions – AuctionAds.com

LinkedIn Invites – LinkedIn Fast Generator Improvements

Unfortunately LinkedIn decided to block this solution because it represented a security risk. There were other alternatives to make things secure, but they decided it was better not to have a free method of connecting with someone you know quickly.
It is assumed that this is nothing related with them wanting to charge money for premium services

Day Job Killer | Allan Gardyne’s Newsletter

One of the few newsletters I subscribe to and always read as soon as it hits my mailbox is Allan Gardyne’s. I have always loved the way he presents products pre-selling them, but he does it very honestly and I don’t think in the near 2 years I have bee a subscriber to his list that I have seen him promote a duff product. There have been products I couldn’t afford, or weren’t what I was looking for at that particular time.
Today I received an email with 2 useful resources for those that purchased Day Job Killer, the first is an exclusive article from Chris the author with some useful tips, and the second information on a product to automate bonuses.

Clickbank Require Disclosure – A-List Bloggers Totally Missed the Point In December

MyBlogLog Wishlists – Stop Thinking Small

MyBlogLog

I hate to say it guys, but all these wishy washy wish lists that appeared today really don’t give MyBlogLog the credit they truly deserve, or really explore the potential of MyBlogLog. Andy Beal has a few useful ideas. Shoemoney also has a list, but I am not going to link to him as he prefers invective to cover up his spamming activities. In fact Shoemoney’s list seems to be an attempt to control the problems his community marketing tactics initially encouraged.
