WordPress Blog SEO isn’t something that can be achieved just by installing a plugin after reading an article on a design blog. There are both mechanical aspects and an art to SEO for blogs, and all websites.
95% of SEO blogs contain outdated, misleading or downright dangerous information that rather than improving your search engine optimization, and thus your search engine rankings, can have a catastrophic effect that is hard to remedy.

Salmon Protocol Endpoints & Canonicalization

This blog post mainly comprises of a message I just sent to the Salmon Protocol mailing list, but I have expanded on it a little.

Salmon Protocol is actually one of the most exciting things that will be used by Google Buzz & theoretically could dramatically make huge changes to the way communication flows around all kinds of web content, whether comments on blog posts, votes & likes on Youtube videos, maybe blog posts themselves, video replies etc.

Is Quality Content Needed To Make Money?

I first published this post under a different title almost 3 years ago (Jan 17, 2007 @ 6:55), but over the last couple of days it has become specifically relevant.
At the time Jack Humphreys was offering a training program combined with high end blog hosting called “Authority Site Center” which was the successor to his previous offering, “Content Desk”.
First of all I was just going to post it with a quick introductory paragraph, then I decided it really needed some additional examples.

Tweetglide vs Twitter For SEO

Twitter deciding to nofollow links 2 years ago really annoyed me.

When they decided to close all loopholes in creating an active link within the bio area, it prevented me linking to my disclosure policy – that annoyed me as well, especially with all the terrible attempts of providing adequate disclosure within paid tweets that are currently being used/proposed.
There was a huge outcry from the SEO community.

Technorati Changes From An Expert Perspective

I am always in 2 minds to write anything about Technorati but ultimately the changes to the site today are extremely significant, and I had to balance that against my ability to offer suitable commentary
  1. Since I started advising Blogcatalog a little in private, writing about Technorati, Mybloglog or any other blog directory or search engine in some ways would be like writing about the competition. Celebrating the great things a competitor does would probably be acceptable, whereas writing something negative would be "dissing the competition"
  2. This blog has always had in-depth coverage of blog search, blog social networks and blog related SEO, especially in regards to things like the benefits of semantic markup and tagging. Not writing something would leave a huge whole in my content and a disservice to my audience.
My choice is to write something, but understand that some might look on what I write as being a little biased. In my own mind I am a Technorati fan, so hopefully that will temper my reactions to some features. I need to qualify the title of this post - I have spent countless days over the last 2-3 years studying changes the user interface, plus the internal and external SEO factors of all the large blogging platforms, social networks and search engines. Whilst my email exchanges with Blogcatalog are extremely infrequent, I am constantly monitoring for changes.

Keyword Research Nitrous Oxide

If you asked Howie Schwartz what are the key skills that make his business a success, at least one of the answers would be “outsourcing” and another would be automation with effective tools.

Whilst he employs 80 people, he also has a team of 200+ website creation, content development, link building and social media specialists to call upon (native English speakers).

If you can avoid doing all the work yourself, either with automation or outsourcing it is more scalable.

Keyword Titan

Just over a week ago, Todd Hogan the founder of Keyword Titan approached me to see if I would be interested in taking a look at their new Keyword research automation tools.

Trust me, I have spent thousands on various keyword research tools in the past, some of them even still get updated by the authors despite changes in the way data can be pulled from the search engines, many of the services are still in business and even booming, and in many ways I am quite happy with what I already have available.

That being said, time is one of my most valuable commodities (though I tend to not use the resource to it's full potential)

Another problem is grouping

It is fairly easy to group keywords if you are generating them from various root keywords.

{specialty} {profession} {location}

Annulment Attorney in Los Angeles

It is far harder, or at least more time consuming on researched keyword lists.

Keyword Titan Ultimate Challenge

I was already starting to prepare a monetization list to offer as an opt-in bonus, as a companion to Howie's 36 Niche report. I knew he was covering keyword research in his training, along with monetization, but I wanted to help accelerate the success of anyone taking part in his competition, and continuing that into the future.

If you help people achieve results, good things happen.

Climbing The Heights Of Mount Google

Link Building is a fundamental skill for SEO practitioners, but many go about it in ways that could hurt their long term ranking benefit. Just over a year ago I wrote my first and only guest post, as an entry into Marketing Pilgrim's annual competition. At the time when I published the article, I joked that "I had been robbed", you wouldn't believe the number of comments suggesting a way to get my revenge, file DMCA, report to Google or recover my "stolen" article.

Climbing The Heights Of Mount Google

When you set out to climb a mountain, or rank for a competitive keyword term, some methods are effective. This is a simplistic look at climbing the heights of Mount Google.

Human Pyramid

A human pyramid might be suitable for those low hanging fruit, but this method is unlikely to help you scale great heights. Not only is it hard to gain great height, but the weak construction is easily eroded by competitors. Photo credit: S@TS

Rich Schefren + Dan Thies = Live Training Heaven

Both Rich Schefren & Dan Thies are holding live training events today that you don't want to miss.

Rich Schefren GPS 2.0 Live

Last year Rich Schefren did something unprecedented - what was scheduled to be a 24hr marathon live training broadcast on Ustream ended up being extended by a couple of hours. Here is a screenshot of what Rich looked like 24hrs into the session - he was still calm and collected, solving the constraints viewers had in their business, even though his servers were being hammered and people were finding it difficult leaving comments on his blog (with 4 dedicated servers) Rich Schefren Live From what I have heard you will be able to listen in without signing up to the VIP list, but then you won't receive a reminder just before the broadcast starts, and you won't be eligible for any of the prizes. Prizes? Yeah Rich is giving away a boatload of prizes, worth subjectively tens of thousands of dollars including private consultation (which I don't think he really offers these days) Rich Schefren Live - 12pm EST (midday) Thursday 18th June 2009 - scheduled to last 4 hours, though knowing Rich he might keep it running longer if there are people online.

GPS 1.0 Review

I purchased the original GPS 1.0 course - if your business isn't going in the direction you want it, you feel you are controlled by your business, or if you have hurdles you feel you need to overcome, GPS is a unique product that will help you. Rich is an outstanding teacher. What didn't I like?

PageRank Sculpting Isn’t Dead But Comments Can Kill Your PageRank

This post was originally titled "Is PageRank Sculpting Dead & Can Comments Kill Your PageRank" Following a confirmation post from Google's Matt Cutts today, it seems PageRank Sculpting as practiced by many SEOs is effectively dead, and comments, even using links with nofollow CAN have a negative effect on the amount of PageRank that can be passed on to your internal pages.

Rackspace Cloud (Mosso) Link To Us Payola

I am actually a fan of your new Cloud Servers service. There are some huge benefits in using your service that as both a marketing geek and affiliate I can highlight and potentially drive you a lot of business. However today you have just introduced a payola scheme that will make every one of my clean affiliate links look like a paid link, thus I am going to have to nofollow every single link I give you, forever. You want me to use badges like this, and in exchange will give me "Goodies" of an unspecified nature. Powered by Rackspace Cloud Hosting - Formerly Mosso Powered by Rackspace Cloud Hosting The links are visible, nothing is hidden, but all the same it is effectively a paid linking scheme. Here is what they said in an email sent to customers
Our New "Link-To-Us" Program We're also launching a new "Link-To-Us" program today. In essence, customers who post new links or change their old Mosso links on their websites to our new http://www.rackspacecloud.com site will receive special goodies. The more sites you post a link on, the more great stuff you will get. How cool is that? Please check out all the links here: http://www.rackspacecloud.com/links Thanks so much for being a part of the Rackspace family, and please keep the feedback coming so that we can continue to build the most complete and easy-to-use cloud platform on the web.
The sad thing is this would all be unnecessary if you just made some minor changes to your affiliate program.

Smartphone War – Google Buying Links & Ignore HTC Cloaking?

I know that is a shocking and controversial headline, but there are a number of serious points to be made. Firstly I like linking to people who link to me, whether on the post they first wrote, or on the syndicated copy that now appears on SEOmoz, even when the name referenced is "Andy Beal". Google is going to have a hard time deciding which is duplicate content, and will probably pick the SEOmoz article because it is the domain with the most authority. If you syndicate articles or blog posts, make sure they link back to the original version, whichever you consider original. I am not going to help Google, as I have linked to both.

Android vs Blackberry Smartphones

I probably know as much about smartphones as Matt Cutts does about... poodles (he is a cat lover) I have a SIMM card with a 7 mbps connection, but purely as a backup or for when I am travelling around Poland and am somewhere I can't get good wifi. The SIMM works in one of my wife's cast off mobile phones in an emergency. As detailed in the linked posts, Google gave away lots of Android mobile phones to developers. That is something I am very familiar with - I used to work in the games industry and among other things handled relationships with all the PC Manufacturers. AMD, Intel, Creative Labs, Nvidia, Matrox, etc etc. Even though NDAs have now expired (I think the longest was Intel's at 5 years) I am not going to go into specific details but here are the challenges.
  • Developers had to create custom code to support specific features - this could take days, weeks even months.
  • The testing teams would have to text code in a matrix, combining various processors with graphics and sound cards
  • The support teams would have to create documentation for each possible platform and potential conflicts
In those days we were working with multiple standards, processors had lots of proprietary 3D functions, graphics cards not only had different features, but also different graphics libraries to access them, 3DFX, OpenGL and DirectX, and even sound cards had different features and sound libraries. Some might look on it as a lot of back scratching, but it was a symbiotic relationship - it probably still is. Developers had early access to hardware, sometimes months, even a whole year in advance. Different terms were subject to negotiation, status etc. In exchange there were lots of cross-marketing possibilities, certainly linking happened, but also branding on boxes, adverts, possible lucrative OEM deals etc. Whilst this might seem to favor the larger development studios, and it did in some ways, ultimately small development studios, if they got on board could certainly gain a "leg up" from the hardware guys, and this is something I was very active to encourage. Thus Google giving away a few hundred, even a few 1000 mobile phones is barely a grain of sand compared to what is given out behind the scenes.

Google I/O Was Press

From what I can see, there were tons of press representitives at Google I/O, they received tons of coverage from notable tech blogs. Press have always received free samples of hardware, or at least most have, though many publications have rules about keeping the "gear", auction it off for charity, give it away as prizes etc. In doing so that can help them remain impartial because they are not keeping the item.

Paid Links

The paid links saga of 2007 didn't really clear anything up and effectively swept issues under the table, with the untouchables remaining untouchable. Michael Gray is forced to nofollow advertiser links. Payola or Blogola, whatever you wish to call it still exists, and is practiced by Google.

Affect on Search Results?

When Matt Cutts defends Google's actions because Google doesn't need links, that isn't quite the whole truth. It is quite true that Google doesn't need to rank for "search engine" in Google Here in Poland, a search for "Android" which used to be a very generic term, the first 4 results point to sites about Google's Android operating system. But Google doesn't rank for Mobile Phone, and even their partner, HTC who made both the G1 and G2 handsets only rank 3rd for smartphone, using US Geolocation and personalized search off (not that I search for this topic... ever), with Blackberry in 2nd. Actually that was yesterday, looks like HTC now rank 2nd, and Blackberry has been pushed down the results. Here are the current results for various terms:-

Are Blogger | Blogspot Blogs SEO Friendly?

Just because Blogger / Blogspot is owned by Google doesn't make it SEO Friendly For years I have been reading absurd suggestions that Google's Blogger / Blogspot service is SEO friendly. At one time this was semi-true, and it is even possible with the current incarnation. However if you use the service "as intended", without expert knowledge, you might find yourself up a creek without a paddle. I am writing this on a Sunday, thus I am going to avoid vulgarities, cussing, and even an attention grabbing headline. The Google engineers at Blogger deserve that and more. Blogspot currently stinks for SEO.

PageRank Update – Twitter Profiles – Tosh

Today we are going to face an avalanche of Technology bloggers who can't help blogging about every intricate detail of Twitter in one way or another claiming that Google has devalued Twitter profiles in the search engine results pages (SERPs) or reduced the PageRank of profiles. Whilst this is theoretically possible, it is also unlikely. To understand why the change has happened
  • You have to understand SEO, external and internal linking, and have an advanced knowledge of how PageRank works. This gives me another chance to drop a very blatant affiliate link to Stomping The Search Engines 2 which is probably the best value (just a measly $1) high quality SEO training online. (http://andybeard.eu/Recommends/SEO-Training.html)
  • You need to study Twitter Linking structure over a period of time - snapshot SEO is for cowboys - even what I am writing here isn't going to be highly accurate, because I don't have access to analytics, server logs etc, and telling a script to analyse every page of Twitter just isn't viable
I am not writing this just for another opportunity to pimp an affiliate link, but I am sick of poor SEO information out there among bloggers. I have suggested SEOs need to clean up old information, but to be honest, this is about as fundamental as it gets I do have a fair understanding of SEO and linking structures, and I do monitor changes, not just the pretty toolbar PageRank Google updates every 3 months or so, or the ranking of my Twitter profile in the SERPs. Here are a few of my more recent tweets on the topic:-

503 Service Unavailable Status Code Can Kill Your Search Traffic

This is a post I am sure the "Andy Beard Haters Club" will gloat over, but as I haven't been able to find a resource anywhere on the effect extended use of 503 Service Unavailable can potentially have on a site, and in particular the effect on search traffic, I thought I should write about it. Using 503 Server Unavailable For Extended Periods Can Kill Your Search Traffic This isn't your typical scenario - 503 errors are frequently sent when a server becomes overloaded, or there are some backend problems. A search of the Google Webmaster Help forums doesn't bring up a huge amount of cases, and mostly it is enquiring about what someone should do when they want to do some maintenance on a live server, probably for a short time. In my case I didn't plan to be in "Maintenance Mode" for an extended period. Here is the complete timeline:

First Link Priority – Is Stompernet Wrong?

Don't just take the word of your favorite SEO blogger, learn to test ranking factors yourself. When discussion took place about first link priority last year, there was certainly some disagreement, and also mention of a few "exceptions" to the rules. My brain is wired to think of exceptions as things which can occur less frequently, or work-arounds that can be used to negate an otherwise common effect.

Prior Knowledge & Non-disclosure

Over the last few years a significant part of what I have written about on this blog has been about SEO - I try to be original, cutting-edge, providing a different perspective. I don't attend conferences, so what I wrote about isn't something I have overheard at the bar, told in confidence, heard from a speaker on stage or anything else. Recommending SEO products or courses is a little like tightrope walking - I don't join any program that suggests either in the sales materials or legalese that it might be proprietary - I know tons of people treat proprietary knowledge casually - rip off other marketers etc. I don't If information comes out in public that is from a notable source, and it has significant ramifications - thats worth blogging about, especially if I can offer perspective. There are people I trust as sources, or whose opinion I value, even when they challenge my own view of the SEO world, and one of those is Halfdeck who occasionally blogs at SEO 4 Fun - last blog post a year ago. Better to catch Halfdeck on Twitter. So I take stuff like this seriously...

A Geeky Look & Some Simple Solutions To Achieving First Link Priority & Referential Integrity With WordPress (Or Why WordPress SEO Themes Aren’t)

Think buying a custom premium WordPress SEO theme will give you perfect SEO? Think again... I don't think there is one "premium" WordPress Theme that doesn't claim to be perfect for SEO "out-of-the-box", so I thought I would bash some theme developer heads around and maybe knock some sense into them. They might achieve 50:50 of what could be expected of a true SEO theme (though I haven't seen the latest Semiologic Pro out in the wild), and potentially with the aid of 3rd party plugins currently available, they could reach 80:20. However most claim they don't need 3rd party plugins to achieve their eminence in WordPress SEO That doesn't leave WordPress SEO plugins off the hook, there isn't one plugin that gets beyond 60:40 or with some tweeking possibly 70:30, depending on what factors you feel are important, or are aware of. Awareness is certainly one of the problems...

WordPress.com Bugged XML Sitemaps

WordPress.com has added XML sitemaps so I thought I would take a glance at their implementation. My immediate though was to take a look at Lorelle's sitemap.xml
  • Homepage daily priority
  • Every other page updated on a weekly basis?
That seems like a good way to tell the spiders to index your site less often than they currently do. With Lorelle you would certainly want spiders checking the home page hourly as she is sometimes the source of breaking news.

Eperks On Mahalo

Here is a little olive branch for the guys at ePerks, an unbiased resource that could be used to present 2 sides of the current Vlad vs ePerks legal kerfuffle.

I am not going to portray Mahalo as some kind of "sacred ground", and I have been a little negative about Mahalo in the past, but it does offer ePerks the opportunity to submit links, hopefully not from anonymous sources, of people happy with their service.

Never Underestimate The Power Of The Dark Side of Search

That title might have inspired thoughs of Jedi Knights, those with ADD might have instantly warped their thought trains to Pink Floyd and "The Dark Side of The Moon". Both might be correct in their connections. Just like you couldn't see the dark side of the force, and you can't see the dark side of the moon, you can't actually see all of your traffic that originates from search on the internet. This is something that Tim O'Reily seems to be forgetting.
Search is only one way to find things. It's the most easily monetizable, so it gets the lion's share of the attention. But take a look at (and report on) what percentage of techcrunch's traffic comes from search. For the O'Reilly Radar blog, it's about 35%. Significant, sure, but hardly a sign of lack of competition. If Google absorbed both Yahoo! and Microsoft, the share of our visits coming from search would still be below 40%. (That tells you what a small share of our search traffic comes from the other guys today.) And that's just the web traffic. Count in RSS (which is much bigger than web for most blogs, including ours) and the Search share of traffic goes down to a much smaller amount. So there's not much worry about people not being able to find information.

Some People Don’t Want To Fish

I think almost everyone knows this saying
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
How many people have old fishing rods in their shed or loft? I bet they even know how to use them, but for some reason a takeaway Chinese, microwave dinner, or eating out is a much more convenient way to eat. Sure, catching fish is satisfying, relaxing and fresh fish on a charcoal grill is extremely appetising. Then of course there is the fun of playing with fishing line... Fishing Line Photo by John2008

Hated Or Loved? Get Front Paged After Being Buried

Sadly this isn't possible on Digg, though it would be interesting if they provided a page with the most buried or hated stories. After all, just because you don't like a story doesn't mean it is spam, but it is still news.

Jack Spirko has knocked together an interesting site where your story can appear on the front page because it is "hated" and I feel the idea is worthy of a mention.

You can see that currently the hated stories seem to only appear in the sidebar - I would love them to be integrated with the main results by default

Exclusive: Share A Post Beta – Blog Post Syndication

Share A Post - Content SyndicationI was honestly wondering when someone would come up with a service like Share-A-Post, because it is one of those "no brainer" ideas that I have thought of doing, but never got around to. When to a huge amount of disbelief I blocked some of my high ranking paid reviews with robots.txt, and hinted that syndication would be a perfect loophole in Google's penalties, no one fully understood what I meant - many SEO experts thought I was bonkers. This is what I meant - widespread syndication with editorial control

Google Double or Indented Listings

Whilst I gain tons of Google indented listings for money terms, and I can achieve them quite often in minutes, rather than days, they are almost always achieved using a few simple steps.
  • Get one page indexed and ranking
  • Write a second post linking to the first (which will also then trackback to the second page)
  • Use the same primary keyword in both posts
The second method I use, for topics that get frequent mentions, are tags.
  • My post with the highest number of links on a topic will most likely rank well
  • My tag page which leads to further posts on the topic will form the secondary listing

Why You Should Nofollow Your Blog Comments?

Dave Naylor seems to think it is a good idea to nofollow blog comments. In many ways he is right:-
  • You get increased automated comment spam
  • You get increased spam from outsourced commenting
  • You get increased spam from people using commenting efficiency tools (Comment Kahuna, Comment Hut etc)
  • You get increased spam from people using dofollow search engines
  • You get increased spam from people using lists of dofollow blogs
  • You get Internet Marketing Gurus encouraging their interns to comment on their behalf
It takes additional time to manage comments on your blog even when you set up Spam Karma effectively, but that is something you could outsource to compensate, or have managed by a more junior member of staff. You also leak a little bit of extra juice, how much depends on your site structure, and how many comments you get. Some people prefer to have huge blogrolls of the people who buy them drinks at seminars.

What Do You Gain?

I think the biggest gain is in community

Players With Money – Devastating The SERPS

What follows is an example of the Google search results being devastated by techniques taught by Alex Goad in his Players With Money membership site.

In the run up to the initial launch, and some time afterwards, I was ranking extremely well, with only the primary domain ranking better.

Now things are a little different…

That is an exact match search - the SERPs are a little noisy without quotes, with many sporting references regarding players and money, so in this case I thought an exact match is a better demonstration.

Relative search positions for a broad match are the same, though the

Chondromalacia Patella – Using Google Health For Niche Research

I have actually suffered from Chondromalacia Patella or "Runners Knee" for 25 years, and at one time even ran a niche website / blog on knee pain that took me a few hours to put together, and pulled in a few dollars a day.

Google today have launched Google Health that is supposedly for US use, but I was able to log straight in, and add the ailment I suffer from. I am not worried about the privacy aspects.

The information provided is pretty basic as you would probably expect in a country famous for medical lawsuits.

One useful aspect of Google Health

Stompernet Site Seer – Ripped Apart

Site Seer is totally free, other than requiring registration. Is it worth handing over your email address? Comparisons are bound to be made with the many free tools available from SEOmoz and SEObook, some of which are purely online services, and others are browser plugins. Many of the SEOmoz tools also require registration, and some are under the hood of their paid membership, especially tools which provide long term analysis of both your own site, and that of competitors.

How Far Will Stompernet Move The Free Line with Site Seer?

Brad Fallon and Andy Jenkins are among the most astute marketers I have ever come into contact with. They want your email address, they are going to use it for marketing their products and select partners, and they are going to a lot of effort to get you to give them permission to do so. My hope is that they will continue development of Site Seer to make it more useful, and thus retain as many referrals as possible. I am a Stompernet affiliate, by referring my readers to them I want them to provide incredible value even in their free material. So far Stompernet Site Seer shows promise, but is certainly not without its flaws So on with this review...

Good Linkbait

How would I define good linkbait? It is the kind of linkbait that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that you did something to make a difference, provided a useful tool, some great content that people found exceptionally useful, or when you invested a huge amount of time researching a story so that you could break real news before anyone else.

I mentioned in my second poll post that the Stompernet guys would be coming out with a new tool soon, and that also they would be limiting availability of some of their goodies to those that subscribe. That will include this new SEO tool.

Wide Circles = Blog Comment Spam

Maybe I am a little sensitive to blog comment spam issues, but I like genuine members of my community gaining a little link juice for their comments. Many comments you find on my blog are better than full blog posts elsewhere (sometimes the comments are better than what I write) The best way to guest post on my blog is just to write a great comment.

Blogging Response Rate (Part 2)

I mentioned I was testing on multiple posts, and that also included the recent Adwords video from Dan Thies of Stompernet. Here are some important notes
  • The headline was chosen to be a little more appealing - it wouldn't have affected people reading a full feed, or receiving my content by email (even though that was switched off), but it would affect links from social media and other blogs, and also platforms that only show headlines, such as Blogrush, Technorati Favorites, Alltop etc.
  • I was sneaky - I didn't have a suitable graphic, and a syndicated copy of the video wasn't possible so I grabbed a screenshot from the video, which I also included in my excerpt on the front page
  • I didn't spend anywhere near as much time on the post as I did with the WordPress SEO software - there was nothing really to test - I watched the first 15 minutes of the video, knew it was a cracker, and started writing with the video playing at the same time. Sometimes it is important to get a post out fast.
  • The Stompernet guys used a reverse squeeze page

Questions For Ken Evoy of Sitesell

SiteSell President Ken Evoy in his Montreal officeImage via WikipediaMy previous post on Ken Evoy of Sitesell attacking blogging created some good discussion, both here and on the Sitesell forums though you need to be a Sitesell owner or affiliate to read the discussion there. For anyone who hasn't come up with a gift for Mothers Day and you live in a country celebrating it tomorrow, it is still not too late to take advantage of the 2 for 1 special that Sitesell are running. Mother's day for me is always confusing. In the UK this year it was March 2nd, in Poland it is May 26th. Globalization and Localization has always interested me in internet marketing Ken enjoyed the discussion that took place here, obviously because it helps promote his brand, but in addition I am sure it also helps with product positioning and development. He has consented to an interview with "tough" questions - I have quite a few of my own, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to "open up the mike" and take some reader submissions.

New WordPress SEO Blogging Software

What a difference 24 hours make.

A few days ago I was honestly prepared to rip a product to shreds. It wasn't that it was a bad product, but it wasn't as well prepared as it should have been, and from what I can tell it was due to an honest communication error between a well respected online marketer and his programming team.

But before I talk about the product itself, I am going to give you a little history lesson.

Banned By Google

It happens... even to the most accomplished SEO professionals. Last August Dan Thies revealed the amazing story about how Brad Fallon, Stompernet founder and owner of MyWeddingFavors.com was kicked out of Google, because of people exploiting bugs in Google. For many people the "proxy hacking" explanation was extremely complicated to understand (I struggled), but what wasn't revealed was how Brad's company survived (and grew) without his top Google listings. It is now revealed, in a 54 minute video with typical (extraordinary) Stompernet style. Stompernet

WordPress.com Subdomain Spam With Tags?

Over a year ago I questioned the use of tagging on WordPress.com to spread link equity around as "a rising tide".

If you use similar tags to a high profile blogger, it can help with faster indexing and rankings, at least from what I have observed.

In many ways the effect is similar to linkfarms, using the tagging as a central hub. Many commentators complain when they see Technorati tag pages appearing in the Google SERPs, because Technorati doesn't have a huge amount of editorial control over the content of those pages, they are more like search results.

In that situation however

Ken Evoy Attacks Blogging & WordPress

I have learnt a huge amount from Ken Evoy over the years, he provides some of the best free ebooks to learn about affiliate marketing and pre-selling ever written.

His SiteBuildIt system has created many successful online businesses and was doing this long before WordPress became popular.

In his email to affiliates today he announced a new sales page attacking blogging head on.

Blogging has reached lemming status. Without even thinking, many small businesses equate blogging with having a Web site. This is obviously wrong for small businesses with something to sell (ex., services, e-book sellers, etc.).

But it's also the wrong choice for

  • Did your site get banned from Google because of viral widgets?
  • Has Technorati banned your blog because of WordPress theme spam in their index
  • Do the links in your viral ebooks now point to an affiliate program or landing page that no longer exists?
  • Did you recommend a web host that is no longer a good choice?

I would even extend that to buying any form of paid link or sponsored review, and possibly also links from directories, social networks, blog commenting etc.

Last June I provided a very simple guide to avoid being banned from Technorati but the same principle applies to

The Fallacy Of Subscriber Only Content On Blogs

Lot of blogs, either using plugins or a little custom PHP code publish articles that are intended purely for their subscribers, with the content appearing only in their RSS feeds, or in emails generated from the RSS Feed.

Totally Illogical

Lets look at this from a number of points of logic

  • Best "public" content - if you are reserving your best content for subscribers, then you might be limiting the number of subscribers you receive. I look on this as a little different to "premium content" that might be served within a membership site or private RSS feed / email list - there

Optimizing Post Titles After You Have Posted

Andy Beal today to kicked off his Blog Marketing Tips For Probloggers series with an interesting look at post titles.

What Andy suggests is that you write a title to captivate or grab your readers attention, and then using the SEO Title Tag plugin, (though All in One SEO Plugin or Headspace 2 would equally work) optimize the titles further for best SEO results.

Thus you would add additional keywords and possibly change the keyword order.

This is something I have done a few times, but is not a universal strategy.

Guru Internet Marketing Mentorship Programs Abusing Dofollow Blogs

There seems to be a new trend with internet marketers running some kind of mentorship or bonus program.

It runs something like this (though I haven't signed up to one to get exact details)

  • You sign up to the mentorship program
  • One of the tasks is backlink building from Dofollow blogs
  • The new internet marketer runs around leaving comments on Dofollow blogs, but uses backlinks to the blog or salespage of the internet marketing guru
  • After dropping a certain number of backlinks, the new internet marketer qualifies for a bonus

The backlinks are sometimes the link reserved for the comment author, or sometimes product mentions

Site Structure – SEOs Going Fishing Without Any Bait

If you don't know what you are doing with nofollow, noindex and robots.txt you can royally mess* things up (face to face I would use a stronger term). Even if you do know what you are doing, you can still mess things up.

I can understand why Matt Cutts might want to change what noindex does, it is not just Koreans making occasional mistake, for instance I just noticed the whole WebProNews video blog is currently noindex nofollow. I am sure that is a mistake, it is easy to make in Wordpress… just one click and save.

PageRank Update – Beware Of Link Exchange Offers

Google Reconsideration or Reinclusion Request

Blogging Is Marketing Your Revenue Stream

That revenue stream in my opinion doesn't have to be current, though it is beneficial to at least have long-term plans for revenue.

PageRank Is The Primary Google Search Ranking Factor

Yes it is time for another controversial SEO post, sit back and enjoy.

These comments very rarely differentiate between toolbar PageRank and the PageRank of whatever kind Google stores on their servers and upgrades on an extremely frequent basis for every page. The most important factor - despite a significant monthly fee, I have met many people who have been members since the very beginning, and are delighted to have joined at an early stage. Stompernet has grown since then, with a relaunch in January 2007 and the introduction of many more faculty members such as Michael Campbell, Sherman Hu, Dan Thies and Leslie Rhode.

Optimizing HTML Links In The Aftermath Of A Blog Storm

Hopefully if you ever get caught up in the whirlwind of a blog storm, and receive 10s, maybe even hundreds of links to one of your articles, that the topic of both the page being linked to, and the pages being linked from are related to your online business, and the topic of your blog. It is quite likely that you have been developing other articles on similar topics for months, receiving very little online attention, and even more worrying, if you create follow-on articles providing important updates, they are less likely to be seen. The majority of traffic will by default enter your site (the landing page) on the page that received the most links, and this traffic might continue for days, weeks, months and even years. The Pied Piper Of PayPerPost?

Pied Piper of PayPerPostOver the last year I have given a fair amount of coverage to PayPerPost, who now house the service along with other endeavours under the name Izea. There are multiple reasons why I have supported PayPerPost and similar programs so strongly, and yet at the same time have never reviewed a link buying / selling service. I have mentioned link buying and selling in passing, and also a couple of Wordpress plugins, but those plugins generally allow you to sell links which have a nofollow. My emphasis both in editorial about services and in the few reviews I have myself written is to encourage the writing of quality content with editorial links. Compensation in whatever form should be based upon the time involved, expertise, and possibly the size and influence of the audience, and not based upon any SEO benefit to a site or service being reviewed.

Colleen highlights the fact that PayPerPost have been planning to have a new domain for their Argus platform for some time, and it is only logical that Argus is not housed under the PayPerPost moniker, because PayPerPost will only be one of many services provided. People who actually monitor the PayPerPost blog of course knew this was coming a month ago. Dan, and investor in PayPerPost... well now the parent company Izea, seems happy about how money is being spent. That is important, I am sure the Izea.com domain name cost a lot more than $9 from GoDaddy. Here is a link to the official Izea Press release on the new corporate entity.

Mixed Reactions To Izea & PayPerPost

As always with anything related to PayPerPost, there is a lot of controversy, and mixed reaction. I have covered the more positive stuff so far, so what follows is the more neutral or negative opinion.

Google Reputation Management Disaster With Open Social

Gmail ClownGoogle just walks into reputation management and trademark problems one after the other, and today is no exception. Not too long ago it was their attempt to force people to give up domains legally registered using the acronym "g.m.a.i.l" or gmail, which Google uses for their email service. The Polish Poets are still in business, and apparently Google also lost in other countries. So today news is breaking about Google's new "Open Social" platform for social media web developers. The big problem is that Google don't own the trademark, or even a lot of the concept behind it, and they certainly don't own their own SERPs (search engine results pages)

Real or Fake PageRank Update In Progress (round 3)

Courtney stopped by to let me know about what appears to be a real PageRank update that is in progress, if there can ever be a real update again.

Many of the blogs highlighted in the update just a couple of days ago seem to have reverted to their previous position.

Now for anyone who might be thinking otherwise, there are still some obvious penalties on place for a few sites, but it is less obvious for the more vocal networks.

Some sites and networks still have a penalty, as do some sites.

Some of those penalties seem to be a carry over

Google PageRank: Joke Of The Blogosphere?

Andy Greenberg of Forbes got it totally wrong when he wrote Google Scares The Search Crowd

In many ways Google should be a little worried about the blogosphere reaction.

I was the centre of attention more by chance and timing than anything else, as I am sure it wouldn't have taken my worthy SEO colleagues long to make a list of sites that have been hit by PageRank penalties and spot some patterns.

As almost everyone discussing the subject was linking to me, and I was trying to keep up with the Blogstorm, moderating trackbacks and comments, and even trying to respond

Exclusive: WidgetBucks Now Safe To Use

...if you want to

I was the first person to mention that the code used by Widgetbucks included a hidden link just a few hours after they launched, but the problem only really got noticed when Shoemoney wrote about this 2 weeks later.

Widgetbucks emailed their publishers today reporting an update in their code which you can include on your sites.

First of all they state:-

One of the concerns we've heard from many of you has been the slow loading times of our widgets. We really appreciate your feedback and comments in helping us improve in this area. So, today

Digg Favorites Slapped By Google

For a company such as Google with a stock price based extensively on anticipated growth and public sentiment, it doesn't take a huge swing in goodwill to have a dramatic effect on valuation. Google has just slapped their biggest fans.

After the very controversial hit many sites took just 2 weeks ago for various degrees of selling PageRank or linking to clients, you might have thought Google would take a breather, but Google it seems hadn't even started its crackdown.

A number of sites have been hit yet again, including this one, but there is also a new element that has

Mirroring Results In The Fall

Obviously despite some negative commentary, Google still is the fairest of them all, though not all results necessarily make sense.

Vanessa Fox came across something interesting in her vanity search today, and I thought I would add to the mystery and mystique of… the Google SERPs.

I noticed that within my own not quite so vanity searches ;) call it an ego search, that a recent post by Tinu about the paid links problems was ranking highly (#7).

That isn't overly strange, until you look a little deeper in the SERP, and discover a second listing for exactly the same article

Answers.com Answerlinks Plugin – How Much Are Those Links Worth?

Wordpress.com owners Automattic, working in conjunction with Answers.com and former Wordpress core developer Alex King have just released a new plugin which allows Wordpress.com users, and Wordpress.org users to easily link to topics and definitions on Answers.com.

There are literally hundreds of such plugins for linking to various Wikis and shopping sites, but for some strange reason those haven't been included on Wordpress.com

Users on Wordpress.com aren't really very SEO savvy and thus are most likely to be "link happy" and of course with the plugin being so convenient, they are more likely to link to Answers.com now than rival sites.

Penalty Confirmed – But I Don’t Sell PageRank

Danny Sullivan has managed to get some feedback from someone at Google confirming there are visible PageRank penalties being applied, as much as a -2 on what is displayed on the Google Toolbar.

This is my follow on from my post yesterday:- Dancing With The Gevil - Defamed By Google?

Fair enough, for those people who have been caught selling links primarily for boosting search engine results.

The funny thing is I have seen so many blogs today that are selling Text Links who have not received a penalty, yet lots of sites that write high quality paid reviews penalized. I am

Stumbleupon Algorithm Unearthed?

How does the Stumbleupon algorithm really work.? I have no idea, and I doubt anyone else really does know for sure, other than core programmers at Stumbleupon. I do know one thing though, Tim is probably the person who has spent the most time studying Stumbleupon, analytically.

Whilst I really appreciate facts, where there are a lack of facts I appreciate discussions that at least try to create models based upon extensive research data

You might find this a little geeky, but for those that like delving into how things might work, Tim's modelling of the Stumbleupon algorithm is just pure gold.

John Chow Slammed In Free Report

On Sunday's I like to provide some entertaining reading, and I have just found out about a free report Alvin Phang has written about the lack of value he received as an advertiser buying a review from John Chow.

I wrote a review for Alvin a couple of months back.

I know I have probably sent him around 30 visitors to his blogging ebook, and maybe 50 or 60 visitors to his blog on making money blogging.

Now if you read recently Maki's article on how to get traffic from popular blogs, Maki's 10th point was donations and

Blogcatalog – Does Onclick Pass PageRank?

When Blogcatalog was relaunched, the links from the directory were nofollow.

In my initial review I suggested that it would be a popular decision to remove the nofollow from the links, and also use a different method of tracking clicks - Blogcatalog have to track clicks because it is part of their blog rating system, and might also help with advertising sales for premium positioning.

Most blog directories do not provide direct linking.

For better or for worse, Blogcatalog decided to use javascript and "onclick" for their tracking. There is a lot of confusion in the SEO community as to whether "onclick" passes

However today actually marks quite a significant landmark, what I believe is a major step forward in their content delivery plans.

If any of the Google Spam Team are reading this article, it was not paid for in any way and your bots can't tell the difference because keyword analysis would pick up the specific words suggesting that there is some kind of disclosure for paid links.

Pushing WordPress SEO Boundaries

How many SEO blogs actually write original content?

I am not talking about original words, but original ideas which can be based either on experience from experimentation or what I would describe as reasoned theory? Experience based on following conventional wisdom just doesn't count - you only need to read one SEO blog for accepted best practice, it doesn't really matter which one of the mainstream SEO blogs you choose. You might choose a few more for industry news with differing opinion.

The kind of blogs I love to read are those with substance, even if I can't fully understand all of them

Will The FTC Investigate Google & Matt Cutts For Paid Links? (updated)

I don't think so but…

  • Matt probably earns a salary from Google as head of webspam
  • Matt has been with Google since 2000, so probably has a few stock options
  • If Matt says something about a new Google service that encourages other bloggers to write about it as well, it probably has an effect on Google's share price, so there is a specific financial incentive.

We have seen how blog discussions can have both a massive positive and negative influence on large company share value, especially with Apple.

Paid Links & Reviews Are Necessary For Relevant Results

I have written about this a few times in the past, first of all questioning Google's definition of paid links and more recently with my post on linking payola. OK I have probably mentioned this a few more times than that, but those articles cover the core points quite nicely.

When Ebay purchase a site like StumbleUpon and eventually includes a footer link, and possibly some contextual links to product pages that are search engine followable, are they paid links also?

Twitter Nofollow

News of Twitter adopting rel="nofollow" is disturbing.

Sure links from Twitter can be abused, because Twitter profiles are so heavily interlinked.

What they should have done is stuck nofollow on your "twitter blogroll" links thus making each Twitter account a little more independent and negating the benefit of building up mass friendships for more than traffic generation.

It isn't a minor thing, Twitter has just become another "Wikipedia", a black hole sucking in link juice and only allowing it to flow internally.

Wordpress SEO Masterclass For Competitive Niches

Take a well optimized Wordpress blog in a competitive niche, rip it apart, and help maximise its chances of ranking in the SERPs and raking in some cash. This isn't lame all-in-one optimization plugins, it is totally geeking it out!

Sandcastles With Perimeter Wall Site Structure

Having previously written that I don't typically undertake consulting work, I do look on any paid blog posts as a form of consultancy. In this particular case Tim from eMonetized decided to order a review of his blog, and we negotiated a little to ensure what you read is totally impartial and any links I choose to give are in an editorial context. The negotiation itself was an interesting process, and I will be writing about that separately. It should be noted that just because I mention improvements here, that doesn't mean that Tim the site owner isn't aware of something, and as also is almost always the case, I haven't applied many SEO tweaks to this site yet. That being said, some of the linking structures I talk about in the more geeky sections of this article I have never seen anyone talk about, and it is my belief that the resulting linking structure is highly unique, extremely powerful, whilst remaining flexible.

Letting Other People Write The LinkBait

A lot of the things I write go completely over the head of many of my readers, and in some ways that is actually a concious decision which certainly costs me a much higher readership.

SEO Consulting

I am not an SEO consultant, and whilst I am frequently emailed about whether I would be interested in doing some SEO consultancy, speciifically in relation to blogs, I generally turn it down.
This is actually a paid review, but lets look on it as “Paid Blog Tipping”.
Blog tipping is actually a meme that has been going on for some time, at the start of the month, and the general idea is to point out some blogs and say what they are doing right, and maybe offer some kind of tip for improvement.

Robots-Nocontent | How To Spot Abuse By Sneaky Webmasters

The moment I heard about the new Robots-Nocontent class that can be added to content, alarm bells started ringing in my ears. Whilst this can be used in a legitimate manner, it is also possible for webmasters to heavily abuse it.

Get The Most From DoFollow | No Nofollow

So now people have calmed down a little from their running around like headless chickens leaving comments on every blog they could find that used Dofollow, and then linking through to unrelated content, lets start looking at how to link a little more strategically.

Do Google Hate Paid Links, Duplicate Content and Cruft?

Eric Enge Interviews Adam Lasnik about paid links, duplicate content and crufty pages (lots of code, little content)

Takeaways

I am sorry to say not a lot, it reinforces Google’s position not to really say a lot, though apparently there is no real penalty for duplicate content, and not to worry about how pagerank flows in your site.

I Have A New Pet

Tumbleweed

If you happen to click through to my site from your feedreader (I know it is a huge sacrifice) then you will see I have a new pet in my sidebar.
He is actually quite a smart little guy, because unlike you, he knows which posts on my blog you might have missed over the last 3 months, based on the number of comments that were posted, or in this case, lack of comments.

The Easiest Way To Pull Yourself Out Of Supplemental Results Hell?

For those that don’t know, “supplemental results” are the bane of search engine optimization specialists.

Here is a great explanation of supplemental results from Rockyfied

Google Supplemental Results: Google supplemental results take pages on your site that have been indexed and put them into a sub database in Google. Supplemental results do not rank well but rather Google uses its supplemental DB to populate its results when they don’t have enough results to show in a given query. This means pages on your site in Google’s supplemental DB will not help you in the serps.

Exclusive: Google Blog Search Extended Results | Supplemental Results

For quite some time, Technorati has allowed you to find out how many other blogs have linked through to a particular post, they even provide live widgets.

Technorati Blog Search

Technorati will also allow you to search a particular blog regarding a keyword and pull up related content.

Technorati Blog Search Single Blog

Technorati Is Missing 2 Things That Google Blog Search Does Much Better

There are 2 extremely useful features that Technorati has missing, that are vital for quality search results.

  • Supplemental Results – Huh? An SEO blog saying that supplemental results are good? Well in Technorati’s case they would be – they do pick up duplicate entries, and display them as such in some search results, it is not universal. Because of the way Technorati tends to crawl sites, there are quite often duplicates of the same content. You will notice in the screenshot at the top of the page, the Bruce Clay blog has a listing for their front page, and their permalink.
Some blogs have many more listings for the same content, mine probably more than many, but that doesn’t mean I want 10 of my results showing on the first page of results for a particular term.
You will see at the bottom of this page that I am pulling a search query by RSS from Google Blog Search – If I did the same from Technorati it would be full of duplicate results.
  • Extended Results – This is an interface issue that Technorati could easily fix. Whilst it is possible to search a site for a particular term, you have to know that site has more information first, and navigate your way to the right interface, which with Technorati is not always obvious.

Google Blog Search Extended Results

I am going to cover this first, because this is a brand new feature introduced sometime yesterday, and I am probably one of the first to notice it, and happen to have convenient screenshots taken just 23 hours apart.

In my last post on Google Blog Search, I used the following screenshot, grabbed just before I published my post.

Google Blog Search
Now if you look at the result at the bottom of the screenshot, you will see my own listing, which had a fair amount of longevity.
Publishing the post displaced my old blogsearch content from the listings, maybe permanently if Google decides that that listing is more relevant, or maybe until it is no longer given an extra benefit due to freshness.

I only have one listing, and it is my most current or the one with most authority – the balance seems to normally tip around the 4 or 5 day mark.

Here is a new listing for the same search taken 14 hours ago, just 23 hours after my followup post on Google Blogsearch was made.

Google Blog Search Extended Results

You will notice there is now an extended results link. That signifies that my site has additional information about this topic.

For a casual searcher things like that are not significant, but for someone like myself who uses Blogsearch as a serious tool to find relevant content, it is extremely useful.

The fact that Google also knows about that additional content on my site, just hours after publishing is also extremely significant, because that can also have a significant blogsearch weighting factor. If someone has mentioned Blogsearch multiple times, they might have more authority on the subject

That additional authority on a particular subject doesn’t seem to have any weighting on Technorati… at all. Technorati authority seems to mainly based on total number of links, and not based on authority of a particular subject.

As an example, Technorati doesn’t think I am much of an authority on [tag]dofollow[/tag] or [tag]tagging[/tag] – it is only recently I have moved up from having “a little authority” to having “some authority”, no matter what the subject.
Also of note is that Dougal Campbell isn’t looked on as an authority on plugins for Wordpress, and his recent post that I linked through to from my Ultimate Guide to DoFollow Plugins isn’t listed in a search for Dofollow as an authority.
Yes I know that Wordpress developers were removed from the Top100 because they dominated the Top10, but that shouldn’t mean they have no authority.
If you want Wordpress news “straight from the horses mouth”, don’t use Technorati, as an example a search for Wordpress 2.2 news with a lot of authority will not bring up recent developments, which I know Dougal has posted about, and so has Matt.

Back to Google Blog Search…

All things being equal (which they never seem to be), I should always outrank Techcrunch or Problogger when discussing something like Blogsearch, but there are other factors, as you can see by the fact that Alister’s blogsearch post on Problogger.net is still outranking my post with an almost identical title (though it does have more words in it)

Did you notice I am outranking the Bruce Clay blog? – The Lisa posted linking through to Alister on Problogger within a few minutes of my post – I am not sure who was actually first to post.

Alister’s article on Darren’s site so far has had 64 references, compared to the 2 references I had from Matt at Globally Local and Dan at The Wrong Advices.

Google Blog Search Supplemental Results

Another thing I noticed for the first time is that Google also have introduced supplemental results for the references. The Lisa was linked by Danny Sullivan in his roundup. If you look at the references you can see one listing, plus supplemental results.

Google Blog Search Supplemental Results

Now for anything to do with RSS, I don’t want to read supplemental results. The feed I am using at the bottom of this page would be useless if it contained supplemental results.

The number of items found on Google are not affected by duplicates, so it is a real number. Technorati’s numbers tend to be inflated by the duplicates.

Things to Improve

I would like a listing that includes the additional references that were part of the extended results, so if a site has 10 documents that are looked on as being or suitable authority, all of them will be shown.

If I am trying to mix RSS content, I want the “real deal” and not just the most recent item.

Aftermath

It is a shame so many of the people linking through to Alister’s guest post are attributing it to Darren.

Now the even more worrying thing I have seen from all the people linking through to Alister’s post is that many want to increase the size of their blogroll, and I am sure 95% of them have no clue about linking structures or the fact that blogroll links also appear on all their duplicate content pages.
That is why I originally took the time to write a post in response to Alisters, because in all things there has to be a balance.
The majority of bloggers don’t research what they write, or don’t research using a blog search engine that brings up results based on the authority of the content, and not the historical authority of the blogger.

Do You Want a $200 Press Release Submission With PRWeb? For Free?

This is actually something quite remarkable, because as far as I know, I haven’t seen anyone else, ever, get to offer their readers a free, premium press release through PRWeb, and it is not like they have an affiliate program (at least that I have heard about), or easy to find promotion codes.

Exclusive: Blogcatalog vs Technorati? – Sharing The Love & Tagging (nofollow removed)

As most of my readers are no doubt aware, I am a strong supporter of sharing the link love, but I always advocate sharing it in a focused manner, preferably from relevant content or from comments and trackbacks. If you trackback/pingback this blog you receive a reciprocal link between highly relevant content automatically, and not only Google and other major search engines count the links as relevant, but also blogging search engines such as Technorati, though with Technorati it is best to do it on a more recent post.

Google | Yahoo | MSN | Cooperatively Introduce rel=”follow” tag

I missed this a few days ago

At the request of WhiteHat SEO community on April the 1st this year all major search engines including Google, Yahoo and MSN Live declared their joint support for a newly developed XFN standard.
The new attribute rel=follow is designed to complement the notorious rel=nofollow. However unlike nofollow attribute rel=follow is designed to express not negative but positive relationship between a linking website and a website rel=follow link points to.
I’ll try to explain it in layman’s terms…

The Ultimate Wordpress Htaccess File?

Canonicalization is a serious problem for webmasters, just read this latest entry by Matt Cutts or this great post from John Andrews. However telling webmasters that they should fix these issues isn't enough, webmasters & bloggers need solutions.

In Search of the Ultimate Htaccess file

A couple of months ago Alister Cameron posted a simple solution to .htaccess such that you didn't need to use a plugin to convert URLs using www to URLs without.

At the time I suggested a couple of improvements, and also mentioned I would post about it here on my blog, hopefully to help
